Yamaha 704 Binnacle Service Info

Hoping someone can help with 704 controller documentation.

My 1999 Yamaha 704 controller lacks a positive feel for “neutral detent” when shifting out of gear. Occasional causes me to overshoot neutral and into reverse.

So far I simply removed the cover and a small upper side plate, but discovered limited access to only the throttle mechanism-sled. I’ll need to further disassemble to find the gearing mechanisms.

The next service phase will be more involved, likely a full removal of the unit, and I wish I had some documentation to reference. Unfortunately, when I purchased the boat last summer, no documentation on the controller. And the OEM service manual has no info on servicing the controller.

Can anyone advise or perhaps even post service / install / setup documentation for the Yamaha 704 binnacle controller?

There is a throttle friction adjusting screw under the cover
on the back. Have you tried adjusting that?
Check out the yamaha.com site, they have some
exploded view diagrams with parts and numbers you might
find helpful.
Someone smarter than me will chime in soon too!
