Default wind conditions. sept-oct- nov-dec... which is worse??

I may be a screwball but I feel there is less wind in nov/dec than earlier in the fall[sep/oct]... AmI the only one that feels this way?/ Up here in central NY the wind has been CONSTANT for several weeks and I am getting disgusted not being able to go fishing.. [I can go but I hate fishing in 25 mph wind catching nothing but a cold.] I recall many days flounder or trout fishing here in NY or NJ in nov and dec on calm grey cold days, but at least the wind was not a problem.... Am I misreading this,or maybe I was just luckier years back and picked my days better.Any comments?? ....bob

I think thats its worse every succeding month after Sept. Maybe its my imagination or the cold. I am sure there is data avialable on the net from NOAA of the NWS or weather.com. Or the local TV weather station web-site could probably answer that. If the sun causes the wind, you would think the opposite but obviously there are other factors in the Northeast this time of year.

Lon Island Sound gets pretty nasty pretty often after mid Oct. Then again it ain't no picnic before May either....

For a few dollars a year, I am suggesting you subscribe to iwindsurf.com and I'll tell youn why.

They do windsurfing forecasts, pretty darn acurately. They tend to be more realistic than what NOAA says, sometimes less sometimes more.
They are absolutely more on target when it comes to those scary late afternoon thermal winds that can turn on like a fan. ( especially the may june july thing )

I us it as one of my tools for making a plan to go fish.

As a windsurfer, I have found that things have shown great variences inthe last few years. There are NO patterns. You have got to plan day to day.

This was the first year that August had some serious winds for sailing, 20 to 30 mph, more so than september.

The gales of November in the Northeast would be my bet. Fortunately most are off the water up here by then.

I suppose it depends on your location. I too am in the Mid atlantic region (Delaware/NJ). My observations over the past 15 or so years has been that the end of Sept and thru Oct are the transition months as the seasons change. Winds generally begin to whip up 20-30 kts and it seems like small craft warnings are almost constant. To add to the mix it is also prime time Hurricane season and even a tropical storm well to the south, say in Florida, will have the seas whipped up all the way to Delaware Bay. Most vessels in the area end their season by Oct 31 so I really can't comment on November winds but just review the case of the Edmund Fitzgerald!
