Random Quote: I would rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy.
He lives just down the canal from me. I remember when we went by his house (recently redone inside and out) via boat and saw his new boat -- it was awesome. I heard them running out there yesterday (unmistakable sound of that rig), and remember thinking that it must have been choppy, since the wind started kicking up some Sunday. If he had only gone out Saturday instead -- it was nice and flat.
You're right: speed kills for the thrills. I used to live in that area and I was continually amazed at the actions of the boaters down there, esp. the "go-fast" boats. They should, at least, have had their life jackets on!!!

Not sure if lifejackets would have made such a big difference. Hitting the water at 100mph is just about the same as hitting a concrete wall. Lifejackets would have made the rescue and following body recovery easier, and I guess they would have saved the young man if knocked unconcious or broke up were he couldn't swim.
Crash helmets, kevlar jackets w/ trauma plates, life jackets and 100 mph they would still be busted up.
Lots of us are only saved from being a similar headline by the fact that we don't have enough money to get in that much trouble.
I have had rides with experienced high performance cat operators. They watch for wakes like their lives depend on it. Fast cats are really NOT for amateurs! The serious offshore jobs all have cabins now. So nobody can get ejected. Oh duh.
and that area is NO Where close to safe at 100 mph on the weekends - thank god he didn't kill anybody else on his high speed jaunt. Lives down the way from me too - and saw (and heard) his boat on numerous occasions.
Does anyone know how the passengers are doing?
The article in the times said the 36ft spectre boat typically has two 500 hp engines. I always thought with that type boat you needed a throttle guy and a driver. The boat looked like it held together fairly after the accident. I feel bad for the family too...I fish in that area and will now think of it differently...
