Default Getting a Gel Coat Repair Kit

Folks;

I purchased a gelcoat repair kit at this time last year for my 1999 Scout from Spectrum color. This kit is the thickened gel coat paste that is approx 4oz and comes with hardener. It was phenomenal! The color matched and it was like a dream come true.

Today I contacted Spectrum to buy another kit but they don't stock (nor will they ever stock again) my color mix. They could offer me a quart of gel coat liquid but not the small paste.

Two questions:

1) Does anyone know where I could find colormatched gelcoat for my 99 Scout?
2) Alternatively; does anyone know how I could take the quart of liquid and make-up a paste like the patch kit includes (cabosil??)?

Thanks,
Joe.

When I mixed cabosil with gelcoat liquid, the spots of cabosil were visible in the cured product. I had to go back and grind that out a little and apply some unthickened gelcoat.

If you haven't already done so, I suggest checking with Scout and / or a Scout dealer. Manufacturers will often provide a small jar free of charge.

I need to go a gel repair on my 2002 Stingray (red) and they stopped mixing my color as well, but it turns out they cross referenced my color for something
very close and Cris Craft makes a red that is within color tolerance. Maybe they could do the same for you as well?

Try speaking with Danielle at Spectrum (her email is below) she's fantastic to deal with!

Is there a kit available whereby the user can tint white gelcoat?

when adding cabosil to gelcoat the resultant paste will be a bit darker than the gelcoat used so you might want to add just a tiny bit of white gelcoat to compensate. never hurts to try a test spot (catalyzed) before using the paste on all your repairs.

to avoid cabosil spots in the finished repair try mixing the cabosil in super throughly, scraping the paste against the side of the mixing container. for a smoother mix try covering the container tightly and leaving the paste overnight, then mix again before using.

good luck- jay

Jay,

You sound like a glassman... What should I do to polish the deck on my bright red 230SX? The deck was uncovered in the sun (the rest of the boat had a cockpit cover).

It's dull, not chalky just not as shiny as it should be. I was going to have a friend (who is a body guy) buff it, maybe wet sand and buff it if need be.. Is that a
mistake? Once it's back to original gloss it won't ever get dull again because it's garage kept and I use Dri Wash (made for fiberglass) that's the same stuff
I used on my Vette's it just won't buff out dullness because it contains no abrasive.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Just so we are clear on this.. When I say it's not shiney.. See the photo below... It's not shiney "enough"
