Default Quick release anchor ideas....

Hi Gang,

Can you describe some of your quick release anchor solutions?

Often I anchor near a current (20 feet of water), and we find that when you hook up a LARGE, they often head straight for the current. They are tough to dig out of there when you're anchored. Drifting along with the fish would be perfect. But anchoring is required to hook some of these fish, due to the presentation required.

I'd like to have an easy way to dump about 50 feet anchor rode with a float, without having a dedicated anchor for this process. I'm think of two eye splices in the rode with a 5000# stainless carabiner as a connector. It should be a quick way to hook in a float and unhook the rest of the anchor rode.

I know some of you guys have this issue when chunking offshore - how is your ground tackle configured?

I just tie a loop in the line and attach a crap trap float with a carabineer.

Back when I used to anchor-fish a lot more I would set the anchor with desired scope and put a bowline loop in the rode & coil /tie up the excess with the polyball & ring below it-all of which was overboard. Leading to it was a 5' or so length of polypropylene that went from a bow cleat to a pelican hook or other common sailboat quick-release clip hooked onto the rode loop. The spring-loaded release pin had a parachute cord attched that led back alongside the boat just far enough amidships to reach & be secured to a cleat or top support where I could get to it from the cockpit to pull & drop off the ball if we had tuna on & engine started. The cord was always then pulled tight & secured to keep the polypropylene tether from dragging but everything was kept short enough so no gear fouling could take place if forgotten. Always worked beautifully with one yank from the cockpit and later the anchor was always floated up & retrieved easily from the cockpit with the ball & ring method.

I have 150' of anchor line. I spliced a large eye into the bitter end. I use a large SS caribiner to hook the end to the eye in the anchor well to prevent loss. I also have a 8" bouy (a boat fender works just as good). When I need to I just unsnap the caribiner from the eye in the anchor locker, snap it onto the bouy and through everything over the side.

I'm anything but a racist. Why can't they hire a few AMERICANS here and there. Oh, that's right, they might have to pay them a living wage. Sorry about that.
Don't ask me how I know. I just do.
