Default Triple Axle vs Dual Axle trailer..Pros, Cons, Opinions requested

For those of you who have used triple axle trailers, how much more ($) maintenance hassle is it?

Believe it or not after pricing them, they are very similar. Apparently getting parts for the dual axle is a little more expensive.

Va does require two sets of brakes on any triple axle trailer.

After owning a triple axle would you go back?

Thanks,
Ben

It's purely a matter of weight. I have a dual axle trailer with brakes all arround. I can see no reason to go with a tri-axle if you don't need it. Possibly a small safty advantage if you get a blow out.

Your better off with the dual axle. A triple axle is VERY hard to manouver. It is very hard to pivot when backing up due to the distance of its pivot point.

5bucks is got it right. I have been towing a setup with a triple axel and a setup with a dual axel ... The triple is great going down the road, but when you get to the ramp ... be sure you have lots of room to manuver!

I have a Tri axle and do not need it for my boat but just bought a new Loadmaster trailer and went tri axle again. It tows much better and I disagree with vbthe two folks who posted before me, I do not have any issues with manuverability in reverse and I have to back the rig up some very odd launch ramps and driveways.

it really is a matter of weight, why you have to go triple. if you can get by ith a dual even if i cost the same ora little more manuverability is the big difference
also depending on trailer manufacturer can make a difference in which way to go

Thanks for the follow up. I don't have to go triple, dual heavy duty is available, just wanted some feedback from those who have experience.

Bluestraveler,

Nice boat!!

Thanks to all,
Ben

buy the heavy duty double. Triples are way more tough on the tires. Look at one the next time you are backing it up and see just how much it flex's and distorts the sidewalls of the tires when it is in the turn. Doubles are a lot more forgiving on the tires. Get a double heavy enough to handle the load. Triples are a pain, IMO.

A fried of mine tow's a large boat 28X10. They wanted him to buy the triple. He went with the dual 9500GVW. It's a hoss! He did it due to the flexing of the side walls on the tires and how wide the turns would have to be made. He did have to remount the axles farther foward, about 24in if I remember right. That was to get his tounge weight correct. He likes it very much. The boat has a bracket and twin 130 Honda's. I belive it weighs in at 7700lbs. Custom home built. 4400RPM =28MPH.
