1999 Yamaha Binnacle question? 1999 Yamaha Binnacle question…
When shifting out of gear into neutral, lacks a neutral detent click/feel.
Coincidentally, the binnacle neutral position is set back ~30 degrees from the binnacles actual mid position.
After years of a neutral detent and at the binnacle’s mid position, I find this neutral set back & lack of neutral detent awkward. In challenging windy/drift docking situations, a hassle where I sometimes under/over shoot neutral. This also discourages other family members from driving the boat.
Perhaps the non-mid binnacle position is to avoid any potential issue for the captains hand on the throttle at WOT, where his fist might touch the dash. It appears to me the handle by itself could actually clear the dash – though close, allowing a mid binnacle neutral.
In any case, if the binnacle produced a positive feel when shifting out of gear, the non-mid neutral position would be a non-issue.
Note: When depressed for throttle only, and returning the throttle to the non-mid neutral position, the binnacle “clicks” nicely when engaging it’s gear control mechanism.
I’m wondering if :
1. Given when coming out of gear - lack of neutral detent – or any positive feel of switching to neutral, might there be a mechanical problem with:
1a. The binnacle itself?
1b. Throttle/gear cables? Stretch?
2. Has anyone every modified the neutral position on a Yam binnacle?
3. Service info?
My older 98 250 ox66 Yam OEM service manual lacks binnacle info.
When I bought the boat used last year, no throttle manual.
Thanks in advance for any advise…. |
