Default Two best days of owning a boat

I have always heard that the two best days of being a boat owner are "the day you buy it" and "the day you sell it".

I just delivered my 1998 Key West 1900cc to its new owner. I wasn't happy. There were many good days on that boat and no major problems: it will be missed. The KW 1900 CC is a great boat and I highly recomend it.

The 19 is going to a good home. The new owner is 84 and a long time boater. Also, I may miss it less when I pick up my new 2006 Key West 2300 WA next Monday.

Is one of your "best days" selling a boat?

I never agreed with that statement.

I thoroughly enjoy all of the days in between the purchase and the selling of my boats. And with 18 boats so far, that's a lot of buying and selling.

I buy boats to enjoy them, not to look forward to the day that I sell them. Nothing lasts forever (especially in my case), so I enjoy them while I have them, then go on to the next one.

Number 19 is just around the corner...

I couldn't disagree with that statement any more than I do. Though the day you buy the boat is a good day, it's certainly not the best. And the day you sell it is one of the worst. The best days are all of the days between those two days, that you actually use and enjoy your boat.

I think that saying was invented by a casual boat owner that couldn't tie their own shoes without requiring help from the local marina.

They saying was coined by a person that should never have bought a boat in the first place. Then repeated many times over by similar people one of the great myths of our time.

I think the two best days are:
The day you buy it.
The day you launch it.

Any boat we've ever sold, neither of us looked very happy as
we've had fun times in every boat we've owned.

With all the boats I've had...and there have been quite a few...... with each one being replaced by a newer one........I've ALWAYS felt a little tug at the heartstrings when my old girl sails off with her new owner.......Regardless of the excitement of a new boat saying goodbye to a loyal friend whom you've shared many good times with is always a sad day......I'm going to be doing it again in the next few months and as much as I'm looking forward to the new boat I love my current boat and will be sad to see it go......NEVER a good day in my book.......

This is a good example of the "BAD" news being louder than the "GOOD"

But then you have asked a bunch of boating enthusiasts.

I had a 19' Mako I sold 11 years ago......... I still miss her.

I would say it depends on what you sell it for. I just sold my boat last week (still waiting for the check to clear so I can not say what the boat was just yet) I can say that I had the boat for 2 years and only sold it because the price was right. I used it for 2 summers and sold it for 2% less than what I had paid. That to me makes it the best day!

I hear that I couldn't wait for the Sunbird to leave the yard (I/O) but everyone in the house is depressed about letting the Hydra Sports go, gotta do what ya gotta do sometimes doesn't mean were happy about it though I stopped into the local yard window shopping the other day because I can't buy this season and when I saw the prices of the crap they had brokered I feel like a fool for not just biting the bullet and holding onto mine

I recently sold a boat (yes a sailboat) to buy my new boat. It was a boat that I put a lot of blood, sweat, tears, and rum into. I wanted to sell it to get the new boat, but I was not happy when it left. I remember standing in the street as the new owner towed it away. As he went around the corner and the taillights faded from view, I welled up with tears. I will never forget that feeling, as stupid as it sounds. I remember thinking, I'll never see her again, will this guy take care of her? Will he wax the hull, and maintain the results I achieved? Then I went inside the garage, had a 10 second power cry, and got over it. I still get sad looking at old pics, especially the last time we took it out. A perfect day on Molasses Reef in Key Largo. At the time, I didn't know that was my final voyage, I looked so happy in those pictures. But I look REALLY happy in the pics on my new boat.... The good thing is I have kept in touch with the new owner and he says I can come over and take a ride whenever I want. Still haven't gotten to it since he's 3 hours away, but it will happen someday. Till then, I just think about all the great times we had on that boat, and all the great times we will have on the new boat.
