What is the easiest, safest way to remove the previous owners name from my boat which appears to be a decal?

Heat it with a hair dryer. It will peel off easily. Use acetone to remove any left over glue.

If your superstitous then have someone else remove the name. It's supposed to be bad luck for the new owner to remove the name.

Dockmaster's right. But sometimes Acetone won't remove the residue and you'll need to find some 202 cleaner. The mechanics at your marina will have it.

WD-40 will remove the leftover residue. If you have painted on names/numbers, use Easy Off oven cleaner followed by lots of soap and water to remove.

I have used a razor blade for small projects, but be very careful...you can cut through gelcoat with a blade.

If it is paint, here are some useful links:

I know West Marine used to have a device they rented (for short money) that looked similar to a buffing wheel that you mounted to a power drill. It would take off the decals without damaging the fiberglass. I'm told it works great. Hopefully they still offer it.

Cover the old decal with a new THT decal!

Thanks one and all. One of these should work.

Heat is the easiest way to remove decals, but sometimes a hairdryer won't have quite enough oomph for the job. I use a Craftsman heat gun on the 'low' setting when replacing old registration decals or vinyl lettering.

Another option is a power washer... just be careful as any device (heat gun or power washer) used improperly can cause damage that you never intended.

Good luck!
