I have an oppurtunity to purchase a new leftover 250 yamaha (twins) for 10,500 (new in crate)each.
I have also been seriously looking at the new 2003 evinrude 250,Approx. 14,800 each.I am rigging a 1982 blackfin 32 foot center console, with marlin tower.hull weight at least 7000 lbs.dry.fuel 308 gallons.which would be the better buy? I am concerned with fuel economy, resale etc.
Well, let's see. If we don't get in to issues of reliability, power, warranty and personal preference, then it comes down to fuel economy.
The Rudes are $4,300 more EACH, for a total of $8,600 difference. At even $2.00/gal, that is 4,300 gallons of fuel. Assuming that the diffence in hourly cruise consumption was eight (8) gallons/hour, then it would take 537.5 hours of use to make up the difference.
So, use different rates of economy, or different prices for fuel, but it will take several years worth of use to make up the difference in cost. And that money could be earning interest, OR BUYING MORE ELECTRONICS, OR FISHING GEAR...
Theoretically, isn't this a better technology than direct injection. Seems like this would drastically reduce the carbonization inherent with direct injection. You should be able to get a cleaner burn, I would think, therefore longer lasting motors, less pollution, greta fuel economy, etc. (like cars). What have the problems with this tech been and why did Yammaha switch?
i have to make a choice between the exact same motors. except i dont need twins. check your dealer price on the rudes. i am getting quotes of 13000 not including the 1750 cash back on the 03 250hp rude. also see my post under "new engine survey" people have been posting opinions on these motors.
Yamahas switch to HPDI was for many reasons, the primary reason was to meet epa regulations.Other reasons;better fuel economy, eliminate o2 sensor, bigger block engine etc.

Just curious...
I'll try to field part of you question grunt.
The old EFIs have worse fuel economy because the fuel is injected outside of the combustion chamber and then drawn in by the piston. Some of the unburned fuel/air mixture mixes with the exhaust mixture from the previous power stroke and makes it out of the exhaust port without contributing any significant power. In a DFI the air is drawn in and the fuel is added only after the exhaust port is closed, hence the DFIs are less wasteful of fuel.
Thanks I am starting to get it - I realy need to see a cutaway of the difference. I guess if the fuel alone is directly injected you have lot more control on the location of the air intake and exhaust ports, and "overlap" or time when your pouring in fuel AND exhasting is less?
What I was thinking is if you can premix the fuel and air you should get less carbon and particulates (but of course more unburnt HC gases)
Evinrude is offering a 7 year warranty on a 250 through April 15th (I think) Granted, you would have to burn a lot of fuel to make us the different. On a 30' hull, I would guess there is a 12gph difference. You've got to consider the maintenance costs for lower units, powerheads, etc. If Evinrude makes it back and with Bombardier pouring millions into it, I think they will. If that happens, re-sale on the rudes will be better. We bought 250's for our boat. Good Luck
