I'm researching "lounge"-type chairs that I can bring out on the boat with me when the Admiral is on board. What options are there for a comfortable chair that she can sunbathe on? I'm looking for a really nice chair that she'll be confortable sitting/lying in.
There's two schools of thought here.
1) Go cheap and just replace it when it dies.
2) Go expensive and replace it when it dies.
I think comfort is about the same. The expensive will claim longer life. The thing is that you can buy 6 or 7 cheapies for the price of one top end. You're choice....
The thing that cracks me up on this stuff is that some people have to brag cost. I also hang out at a striped bass site and there was a thread started by a guy, pleased as punch, with his new Van Staal titanium pliers. ( $300.00 ). Personally I go to a place called ocean state job lot and get 8" needle nose stainless for 4 bucks a shot. They last 1+ seasons but that gives me about 75 pliers for the cost of one of his. Personally I won't be here in another 75 years.
I've got a top of the line U.S. Boat white vinyl Cpt's Chair sitting in my attic that was used twice. There just wasn't enough room in the boat. If interested I'd sell it for $40, and buyer paying shipping.
Those camping-type chairs that they sell at Wally World and everywhere else for about $10 work pretty good. They fold up into a bag about 3 feet long and 5-6 inches in diameter. They have plastic feet where the meet the deck so the deck doesn't get gouged and when folded out they seem plenty solid. I have one of the traditional deck chairs that has a gimbaled rod butt holder for when the mom-in-law comes salmon fishing with us. But if not for the rod holder feature, I would use the Wally World chairs.
A folding chair on fiberglass deck tip: What ever type chair you get, Plastic or aluminum tube style will slide. Give it the gas and watch the occupant smash into the transom! For the tube style I split a rubber heater hose and epoxied it around the tubing. Stays put, works great.
I bought those thickly padded Boat US deck chairs. They are real comfortable but they have some drawbacks. When you want to fold them up and store them they take up huge amounts of room. I can't fit more than one in a Bonneville trunk! They are so bulky I hardly ever use them. I think you are better off to buy the cheap canvas ones that fold up small.
