Default U Joints Volvo duoprop

Heading down this weekend to replace the U Joints in my DP-E Outdrive. Could anyone that has done this recommend if it is easier to remove the entire unit or just the top section?

Also, I've seen online a special tool to remove the pins. Can't recall what these pins look like. How does this tool work? Are the pins threaded or pressed in / out?

Thanks!

Just remove the upper. The only pins I can think of are the H bracket pins, you wont need to touch them if you only pull the upper. Remove the two 1/4 X 20 cap head screwes in the helmut(5/16 or 8mm allen). Get a pair of 1/1/2" long 1/4 20 bolts and thread them in the threaded holes in the helmut plug. Tighten them down and tap the helmut to remove the plug. push the helmut back and up. If the trim track comes off dont worry, look close and youll see a white tooth on the round gear and a notched tooth on the rack gear, line em up on assembly. next drain the oil and remove the bolts and bellows clamp and cotter pin from the shift bell and rod. Lever up and rotate the upper 90 degrees then pull off. Pull out the spline coupler and sight down it for twisting, replace if needed. Dont loose the shims between upper and lower. Replace the cross pieces if needed and re-assemble. Note: Leave the spline coupler out and pour in the oil right to the top before installing the upper, its a lot faster then pumping and purging. Fill the upper through the counter sunk 8 mm head allen bolt on the front stbd top of the upper, vent through the dipstick hole. easy like pie.

Thanks Baitkiller! I've had the sterring helmet of before so that atleast will be familiar. And you are correct it is the H bracket pins I was wondering about. I'll try it just removing the upper section.
