Need to choose between the 200 yamaha OX66 or 200 Mercury Carb. Has to be one or the other. No other choice. Not concerned about the cost difference but will be $1300 more for Yamaha..

run a search on the 0x66 200 on this site. What you'll find are very few probs mentioned and some consider it the most reliable engine yamaha ever made. I love mine!
I have the Mercury 200 SW carb with only one complaint. It does not like to run in long no wake zones or troll. Loads up the plugs with oil and won't restart without cleaning them. I have yet to look for the "no foul" plug I heard about from a friend. I double checked the oil pump setting and it's fine. It's broken in now with I think 35 or so hours on it and will be out of warranty this May. I'm planning on running the oil down and swapping over to a full synthetic at that time. That and the plug change should take care of the issue. It likes the gas dock plenty but for what it cost up front, I knew that when I paid for it. The best thing about it is that anyone can work on it. No need for computer hookups to find out what's wrong. Air, oil, fuel, spark, and it should run . I hope for many long years of service provided I don't come down with the dreaded 4 feet more please disease
FWIW I might have bought a Yamaha if the deals were side by side as yours is. I do know for a fact that Yami parts are just plain expensive.
90 degree V-6 yami- as bulletproof as it gets. 0X66 -perfect starts and excellent economy. Lower unit life expectancy- limitless. No question- get the yami....
Both are quality engines. Odds are, the Merc. will go out (most probably with the electronics on the motor) before the Yamaha. The Merc. is probably a little faster, but can not stand up to the reliability of the Yamaha. Furthermore, if you plan to trade or sell your engine (on or off of the boat) in the future, you are more likely to have quicker success with the Yamaha. There is a reason why the Yamaha is more expensive than the Merc. FWIW, if you buy the Merc., you will always try to compare it to the Yamaha to all that you talk to. If you buy the Yamaha, you will never talk about the Merc.
Thanks for all the replies...
It's obvious to me that the nod goes easily to the Yamaha even with the price difference.
So to both merc and yamaha fan's....Thanks again
