Smelly - 2/3/2006 10:38 AM HI Team! If my hull has a deep vee of 22 degrees, isn't this angle good enough to cut through chop and not need trim tabs? (As Trim Tabs help the boat plan quicker and hence cut through chop easier) Or can Trim tabs help any boat significantly - no matter how deep the vee is? Why is it worth me spending the extra $$? I have a Bertram 28, it is also a deep vee. Even though the B28 is a nice riding little boat, there is a huge improvement with tabs. In addition to being able to level the boat side to side, you can lower the bow so that you take the hit starting well forward on the hull, rather than one sudden slap amidships.
As far as improved time to plane, I do not see that at all, the boat comes up out of the water best and fastest with no tabs at all. The tabs cause drag, which actually makes it harder and slower to plane. The only time I add tabs is to adjust the boat once it is up and planing.
Bottom line is that the tabs are a tremendous improvement, even for a well designed boat,
