Our local boatshow's comming up next weekend and as usual - I'm supposed to go and give a few fly casting lessons, demos and talks etc..press the flesh and drool over the new boats.
I see the weekend boating press has a writeup on a new boston whaler 21 outrage centre console, that will be there and is a "show special"!.
I actually like the look of this lil boat, it just seems a little expensive for a single engine 21 ft boat to me..
Can anyone confirm for me if this seems a "reasonable" new boat price? (and if it's adequately powered?)
Model - Boston Whaler 210 Outrage
Length 6.24meter (21ft)
Beam 2.54 meter (8ft 6 in)
Hull weight 1224 kilos (2692.8#)
Max power 225hp
Motor Fitted Merc Opti 150hp
Fuel capacity 359 litres (79 Gallons?)
Price Au$98000 (as tested) (US$55860)
(trailer additional)
Does this sound right as far as price and power to you guys?...this is with no Hardtop, T Top Bimini, or accessories, which I guess would add quite a lot to the final tally...(Say another 25 - 30K Oz) it just seems a little steep I guess...and 150 ponys seems a little on the light side for all a them peso's??
Hold on to your hats guys... this out to be a great thread...
mr trouty- i just sold my 21outrage. great boat. i dont think you would be happy with 150hp motor. i had twin johnson 115hp motors. with full load i cant imagine that 150hp would be enough. good luck
Whether this is a lot different price to what you guys would pay for the same boat stateside is all - i.e. how much dearer it is being as it's been shipped downunder is all.
It's common for Ozz boats to be a little "underpowered from the dealer" for several reasons, not least of which is it makes em a little more affordable bearing in mind our $1 exchange rate brings only US 54c-57c or so depending on the day.
Also our fuel costs almost double yours, it's already over 4 bucks Oz a gallon, say roughly US$2.50 a gal, so folks do as a rule tend to go more for economy than speed hereabouts.
In MOST places here, 20 NM offshore see's you over the continental shelf, it's not often we'll run 70 miles to any canyons etc, theres generally no need - it's usually easy enough to get a feed within 5 or 10 NM for most folks.
Even with slightly underpowered boats an hour cruise @ 20 knots sees you well into bountiful fishing grounds at an economical cost...different strokes for different folks of course.
Just curious Blue how our costs measure up against the US, is my reason for asking. What makes you think this will be a string to hold onto the hats?

Boston Whaler 21 outrage...
Trouty;
I have a 21' Ventura, same hull as the 2002 and prior years outrages. The boat USED with mercury
opti's on trader is going for $47,000.00 average.
Mine has the 200 Yamaha HPDI and does about 37 mph at 4700 rpm. With 150 that is too little power although the new products appear to be lighter this boat should have at least 200-225 hp
for satisfactory operation.
You could get the boat delivered cheaper here, but then you wouldn't be able to use it in OZ .
Remind our mates on this thread that you live on the other side of the world, and that getting US or European stuff to you has a big price -- I saw new Porsches that sell here for about US $85K for sale in Sydney for AU $300k, for example.
I think the price is pretty reasonable delivered where you're at -- keepin mind that Whalers are just about the most expensive boats in their class. The power also seems reasonable, by Australian standards. Every boat I've ever seen Down Under is a little underpowered by US standards. But you guys do not run as far or as fast.
What's service on Mercs like where you're at? Most everything I've seen there hanging off transoms is Japanese.
Mr T,
No need to guess, sir. I just went to boattraderonline.com, it seems used ones are going for 35K to 50K over here. There was a new one, but it said "call for price". Whalers are steep for sure. chip.
As I suspected, a little light on for power and just a tad dear although not as bad as I'd thought.
I well remember the traps of buying US from my first hard won lesson. I'd not long had the internet, and spotted a pair of the ubiquitous Boga grips which every self respecting fishing guide just has to have.
US$112 seemed a little steep but what the heck.
Bye the time they arrived, my credit card was Oz$300 lighter! Mrs trouty (AKA She who mistakenly thinks she wears the pants) was patently NOT Amused!! (in fact if memory serves me she threatened to sharpen em up and use on as bedizzers on me!)
The Whalers no where near as bad as that experience bye the look of it tho.
Perhaps the "funniest" thing about the marine writeup for our boatshow was the lead page, with a HUGE advert for (wait for it) quote:"Amazing value Bayliner package"
quote: Bayliner the worlds No 1 manufacturer of Luxury boats (my emphasis)..
quote: make sure you don't miss out on one of these exceptional value packages, Introducing the classic american style 21' Bowrider. Powered by an awesome 5 litre V8 mercruiser this ocean going boat is perfectly suited for day trips to Rottnest (Island) It comes complete with Bimini top, stereo system, ice box, ski locker and boarding platform, and for a limited time a fully licensed trailer, and safety kit including 6 PFD's flares, 27 meg radio, anchor rope and chain and fire extinguisher.
This represents exceptional value at only Oz$49,990 ($US 28500) Don't miss out!
Exactly half the price of the same size (21ft) underpowered Boston Whaler outrage!
Methinks maybe theres a message in there somewhere about quality!
A neighbor of mine has a 1996 21 outrage. He had a yamaha 225 on it and it ran ok. The rpms were a little low though. That engine blew up and he replaced it with a 250 with the OX66 injection and is very happy with the combo. I think he paid about $37k for the rig in 1996..
Said about either grady's or Boston Whalers, They chuckle when they see a guy in one because "there goes someone who paid for two boats and only ended up with one."
I saw a 2002 BW 210 Outrage at a dealer here in Ohio. They were asking about $60k. That price included a trailer and numerous options (200 Opti, T-top, Clarion AM/FM/CD, deluxe leaning post with livewell, etc.)
I guess that you either get or you don't....... People who buy Whalers are making long term commitments to a boat with the assurance that the boat will last for many years and that if they decide to sell there will be less depreciation than in any other brand. The same can be said for Gradys but not to the same degree. Having a chuckle about the "guy who paid for two boats but got one" is humorous, especially when you consider that the guy who bought the Whaler will most likely have the last laugh when he is still using his boat in 20 years or when he decides to sell and gets back a large portion of his initial investment.
Look, I am not saying that $60k is fitting for a 21 foot boat. It is incumbent upon the buyer to negotiate a better deal, and they can be found but temper this higher price with the fact that most long time Whaler dealers build in a level of customer service that is unmatched in the industry. It is not uncommon for the factory to correct small issues for years in the future with no questions asked. My personal experience is that I get first rate service, always. I guess the bottom line is that you either understand the value and are willing to pay for or you don't. There is a big difference between value and cost, I'll take value any day.
P.S. I bought my 2000 21 Outrage from a dealer after being at a boat show where the show price was $54k. My price after negotiating was $38k.
I was shopping an 21' Outrage last year and my local dealer had a 21 on a special demo day ready to sell. It was completely loaded with every option in the catalog and a 200 Optimax on the back. A nice $3-4K trailer included too. Asking price was $53,595 + sales tax.
Trouty, Bite the bullet and pull the trigger. You can sell your gun collection and pay cash.
neva...first thing I learned - ya never sell ya guns!
Trubble with the restrictive licensing system we have now - if I sold em - I'd never be able to replace them in the future..
Lot of the guns you guys take for granted are classed here as "high powered" meaning a protracted battle with police firearms branch to gain a license - once you've got one you don't give it up for anything, EVER.
To get one you must have had a low power license for sufficient years, have letters from farmers with over 5000 acres allowing you to shoot on their properties, and letters from their neighbours stating they have no objections to you shooting on the neighbours farm, and so on and so forth...then a policeman has to go to all the farms in question and inspect them to make sure theres no railway lines or highways transecting them where someone might accidentally cop a stray bullet etc etc..as well as interview all the letter providers. You also have to have an INTERPOL clearance to see if you have any record anywhere else in the world, for armed crime..and character references from Justices Of The Peace and - well you get the idea - you NEVER give up a high power rifle license in this country - they are like hens teeth...
Yeah I wouldn't mind a whaler...But sell my guns for it????.. DONT want a whaler THAT much!
No - I figure, use the firearm to rob a bank and then just buy the Whaler with stolen cash - or cut out the middle man and just "steal the whaler from the boatshow"...during the "test ride"!
I can see it now - I'll just need an accomplice outside the heads in my little tub with a couple 44 GAllon drums of fuel, push the test drive skipper over to swim for it as we exit the heads - rendevous with my boat for extra fuel, and away into the wild blue yonder....
Hmm - I see a plan forming!
