Default New Jersey Trailer Registration

Any NJ boaters out there with experience and advise on getting an older trailer registered. The individual selling has no owners card or any other doumentation, but will provide a notarized bill of sale.

NJ does not title trailers. All you should need is his old registration and bill of sale.

Thanks. I appreciate the response. I have two trailers and I am aware of that. The problem cited is that the individual selling the trailer has no owners registration and cannot provide one. After doing the proverbial circle dance with dmv personnel who cannot give an answer on how to proceed under the circumstances, I'm looking for practical (experienced) guidance.

The best way to handle the problem is to register the trailer as home made. Tell dmv you made the trailer yourself. you will need to pay tax of the "cost of materials" for the trailer.

A notarized bill of sale will work in NJ. Actually the DMV has a form specifically for this. They really can't require a registration, suppose I bought the trailer and have a ramp on my property. I may never take that trailer on the road. You will need a VIN # however. If you can't locate one, then the home made route will work. I've done both of these and the notarized bill of sale on many occasions.
