What are the comments and recommendations of the Board regarding this matchup? I am talking about new, 2003 models. And please, let's keep the attention on these two prospects only for now without offering up any alternative choices. Thanks.
I looked at both boats earlier this spring and liked the Grady much better, although I didn't buy either boat. I don't see a lot of edgewater boats on long island sound but Grady's are over the place. Do a search on edgewaters on tht - a lot have been written about the boats. Good luck.
I also looked at both boats, but I would chose the Edgewater. I think it has more deadrise than that model of Grady (24 v. 20, I believe), and a better warranty on the hull (lifetime v. 10 years). Also, check out www.boattest.com, the fuel ecomony was great on a boat that size and weight. Fit, finish, etc. on both boats are way above industry standard. I believe the base on both boats are similiarly priced (low 40s), but the edgewater's options tended to be a bit pricier. Finally, you don't see as many Edgewaters as Gradys because Grady has been around longer and has more dealerships. That's nothing against either hull, but it might be a factor if you don't live near an Edgewater dealer. Hope that helps.
I bought the edgewater. Very dry and stable. It is more like a 23 than gradies 22. I think its wider and longer with more storage. The freeboard is really high almost hard to get out of. It has no wood even though grady has an excellent hull. I am very happy with the ride as I went out in long island sound for the last couple of months with small craft warnings and never felt safer. If you live in the area I would be happy to give you a test ride or call Ritch @bridge marina in bayville NY.
Love my 222. Better hardware, fit and finish. Low bow rail is great for fishing. I have had 0 problems. I have my Grady up for sale if you are looking for a deal. Check my boat out on boattrader.com $36,500 and it is like new.
Don't know about the Edgewater 222, but I did own the 247. Out performed and rode better and drier than the same size Grady, hands down. The Gradys were finished off better though. Can't go wrong with either boat, but I would choose the Edgewater.
The console layout is better on Edgewater for adding toys er, Essential Electronic Safety Equipment...
The Grady has a dance floor in the bow vs. seats in the Edgewater. More Storage!
The Grady has a much better leaning post configuration. More storage!
Go Grady...
The Edgewater has 30 gallons more fuel capacity...if you need it!
I haven't ridden the Grady at sea but went on one in a boat show. I own an Edgwater and am very pleased with it--dry riding, lifetime warranty, lots of room, very easy for fishing. I remember one albacore trip when we got into them good and three guys were moving all over the place with no problem. My only suggestions if you get the Edgwater is to get it with trim tabs since it seems to ride high and come down hard. I think Grady is more of a poofter boat and Edgwater is much more suited to taking more punishment. Just my opinion..
Bought a 2002, GW Tournament 223 last December. It's a dual console, but built on the same hull platform as the 222. I use it on Lake's, Erie and Huron for Walleye and Salmon fishing. The boat handled rough seas very well, and was excellent for drift fishing and trolling. It met my expectations, and then some.

The Edgewater is offering a new leaning post like the 265 according to the factory guys at the show in Lauderdale Much fancier, more fishing friendly, more storage. I think both boats have 20 degree deadrise. The Edgewater site states 20 degrees for that boat, So the ride should be similar, but drier on the Edgewater if those large spray chines and high flared bow are any indication.
Again, Grady 222 and Edgewater 225CC only, please (with the exception of other GW and EW models with the same hulls, of course ).
There will apparently be one with larger baitwell, tackle storage etc. that's an option. Still might not be to your liking, but it will be different from the current one.
The 225CC is still on my short list, but it's not everything I want in a boat. Storage, especially under the floor, and access to various areas of the bilge, being the major drawbacks.
I hope the EW leaning post improves, but I understood the factory rep to say it isn't much more than an additional livewell. The Grady leaning post with tackle station is great.
It is not helpful, but I have to think you will be very happy with either boat.
I have an Edgewater 225cc and absolutely love it. Fishes 4 on board comfortably. Takes rough water really well. Storage is a little on the light side but other than that there are no complaints. You can't go wrong with a Grady either. Prices are similar. Good choice of boats.
I think the Grady is probably a little better for throwing a cast net off the front and if you would want to fly fish off the front. It is a solid boat.
I chose the edgewater because in my opinion, it was a little better looking (not that the Grady isn't), had a walk in console for storage, had forward seating, and was a little bigger.
I felt like the layout on the Edge 225 was a little better for a blue water boat and that's what I mostly do, so that's what I bought.
Matt, they have changed the Grady 222 since you were boat shopping and bought your Edgewater 225. The current version of the Grady (beginning with the 2002 model year, I believe), like the Edgewater, has the walk-in console.
