dang. dang. dang. dont know if we bumped something or picked up some debris in the prop or just a plain ol' mechanical failure but the port lower unit let go on sunday afternoon. the boat is at the tech for replacement/repair. said it would only be a few days for repair/replacement. when it went, it made a pretty awful noise, so i guess its bad, but the tech has not opened it up to see what happended, just yet.
we had an overheat alarm about 2 months ago (only once), so we took it in for a check up. he dropped that lower unit and said we had sand in the impeller and it might have impared its ability to move water, so he replaced it. he didnt get into the lower unit, only dropped it to get at the impeller/waterpump. i can only assume that everything went back together properly. i dont mean to point that out, but thats the only thing ever to happen to that lower unit, so it bares consideration, i guess. im no mechanic, for sure.
evinrude was straight up with the replacement plans for the lower unit it sounds like, and im proud of how they are treating us. no questions asked, just 'let us know what is wrong, and we'll take care of it.'
parts fail. it happens. im just glad BRP is so aggressive in their service. no wait and see, or what did i do to break it. just 'yup. its broke. we'll fix it.' im well pleased with that, and everything that BRP does for us, but i still gotta report the hull truth, and had to let inquiring minds know about the lower unit.
while the boat is in the shop, we are also having the neutral gearshifter rocker switch thing replaced (yes, the one from a few posts ago), and there is some sort of a short in the starboard electrical system, but i dont know if its under the cowl or in my battery system or in a fuse or ??? just havent figured it out on my own, so im letting the pros at posner marine do their majic. probably a fuse in an obvious place.
oh no, a lower unit let go! the sky is falling, the sky is falling!
if we get an update on what exactally went, i'll keep ya posted.
cheers.
