Default Anyone own a Pursuit 3070 Offshore?

On paper it looks like an interesting compromise between fishability and WAF (wife acceptance factor). I've seen many photos of the boats but none of the seating area between the helm and cabin area. Does anyone have any photos of that area? How well does the rod storage area under helm work? Any overall thoughts/opinions from owners?

Thanks.

There are 2 at our marina which are owned by friends. It is a very nice boat and my second choice. Most who are looking at this style boat and size compare the 3070, GW 300, and maybe the BW 305. I recommend looking at all of these to see which suits your needs. As to your questions.

o The helm has a bench to starboard which is mounted to a console that is part of the sink/refi unit. IIRC you can lean against it standing or seat 2 persons as it is wide. I *believe* the port side bench is L-shaped but it has been a few months since I have been on one.

o IIRC rods in the under helm storage are limited to 7 ft. Don't recall the exact length. My friend said he had to be careful so that the tips do not get pinched.

o Both owners are very pleased with their boats.

I bought one in August 2005 the 2003 model and I agree with your assessment, my wife likes it and it is nice for me. the rod storage is nice cause it is a pain to put your rods in and out of the cabin or car. if you just go for a cruise on the weekend you don't need to touch the rods. the rod storage could be a little longer but is still nice, some of the trolling rods need to be flexed to get them in, something they are designed to do. You will not see the speed of your world cat. the reason I got that over the other 2 30ft cabin boats, I wanted to go used for my first boat and I wanted a boat with comfortable shaded seating for three. I have a young daughter. In the summer you get roasted out in the sun and the pursuit has a big hardtop. I like the whaler too for seating but the old mercury motors were not what I wanted either. wife did not care for the Grady cabin. you do make some compromises. the aft cabin is smaller on the pursuit, the top half goes to the rod storage. I don't have a generator, if you get one with a generator you lose the in floor fish box. In August we took the boat for 2 test runs and the cabin stayed cool without AC. this was in Marco Island and hot there. My friend has a Grady and says the cabin is too hot for his family in the summer. I am very happy with mine. others have them too. I would get the F250s if you can. the quality is good and as you said the WAF is high. good luck

Onewolf:

From your question on seating space, it sounds like your are referring to the Z3 configuration (center helm), where the Y3 is with the helm located on the starboard side.

I own a 2004 3070 Offshore Z3. With the Z3 config, you get more helm area, a true v-berth with a center table and less cabin space. The mid-berth area is also slightly bigger on the Z3. The Y3 adds a dining table, angles the main berth sleeping area, slighlty smaller mid-berth and adds a curved lounge seat in the helm on the port side.

The Z3 was supposedly designed by Pursuit as a 'fishing' boat. The Z3 is no longer produced after early 2004.

Overall, I feel it's a very nice ride. No regrets to date.

Your question regarding seating area - on the Z3 you have about 18"-20" in front of the bench style seat that faces forward. The seat is a cooler and an access to the area under the helm station for storage. I liked this setup as it keeps everyone inside and in sight.

Thanks for all the replies. It sounds like the 'Z3' configuration with the center helm is the one I'm interested in. If anyone has any photos of the space between the helm station and the cabin I would be interested in seeing them. Please post here or send e-mail (my e-mail is in my profile).

Thanks again.

I bought the Z3 for the same reason. I wanted a family cruiser that still handled and felt like a CC. No photos of the seating area, but it is large enough to seat 3 across. The backrest is the front of the CC and it is straight up and down (not comfortable like a chair). We use it when the weather doesn't permit sitting in folding deck chairs in the cockpit.

The rod storage is awful. The area under the helm will fit a rod of no more than 6' and it's a tight fit. I carry my rods in the roof-mounted rod holders when running and lay them in the cabin when not in use. Storage of any kind is poor on this boat. I don't stay aboard so the cabin is used for storage.

The only gripe (other than storage) is the lack of access to the rear bilge - there is none. Both the raw water & baitwell pumps are there and have failed and are inaccessible.

Overall I love the boat & think the layout is perfect for my needs. Feel free to PM me with any questions

JoeyM also has the boat and has a ton of pics which probably include the forward seating

Gary

What sort of fishbox capacity does the 3070 Offshore CC have? Or is there a reason why I see many of them with a big cooler in the cockpit?

Fishbox capacity:

- a good-size livewell can be used to keep catch alive longer or to sort out later for throwbacks

- in-deck box (if you got a generator, this is where it would go) - very big. approx. 5' length, 24" wide and 18" deep.

As far as access to the transom / bilge, the storage drawer unit (for frozen bait / aluminum bottoms) in the transom can be removed to service pumps, tanks, etc. The unit has screws along the outside edge for removal. Some re-caulking is needed to seal the seams when it is replaced. Not too terrible if you need to get in there. I have a 2004.

The seating area in front of the helm does have its limitations for just hanging out on the boat if everyone is seeking cover. Basically when seated, you are looking into the cabin or eye-level with the lower portion of the front windshield.
Three accross when running not an issue.

Default RE: Anyone own a Pursuit 3070 Offshore?

Update!

We signed a purchase contract this afternoon for a Pursuit 3070 Offshore CC. It's a 2000 model year and the contract is contingent upon a satisfactory survey that is scheduled for Tuesday.

The boat we are buying has Yamaha 250 EFI outboards and we quickly concluded that we would be repowering immediately (with Yamaha 250 four-strokes) so the repowering was worked into the deal (The boat is being sold by a fairly low production (high-end) boat manufacturer that acquired the boat as a trade-in). Before the sea-trial I knew I wouldn't be happy with the Yamaha 0x66 250s as a long term solution but I also assumed that my wife wouldn't be able to tolerate the stinky/smoky 2 strokes after getting used to the wonderful Yamaha F225s on our current World Cat. As expected my wife decided we should spring for the repower right away. I love my wife. We're getting F250s based on Pursuit test reports and from my own experience with the F225s I assumed they would not really be enough power for this big and heavy boat (It weighs about 5,000 lbs more than our current World Cat!).

I have never been a catamaran bigot nor a V-hull bigot. I've always accepted and espoused that all boats are tradeoffs. If there was a catamaran in this size range with the features we desire we would certainly consider it. Of course the World Cat 320EC has most of the required features, but it's NOT a walkaround and it's WAY WAY beyond our current boat budget.

So assuming the survey goes OK, our 270TE will be going on the market in a week or two. And also a pair of 2000 Yamaha 250s (We assume that we can get alot more from the 250s than the trade-in value offered).

One question I have is related to outriggers. This Pursuit does not have outriggers. Before sea-trialing the boat I assumed I would simply mount Lee/Taco/Etec bases on the hardtop, however I'm having a hard time trying to figure out where they could be mounted where they wouldn't be a serious threat to head "bonking" on the bridge deck. I'm curious what have other people done as far as outrigger mounting on the 3070 Offshore CC?

Thanks for all the previous useful info/opinions. It's probably time to get another wheel.

Check out the 'small' size Lee wishbone outrigger mounts. These will mount on the outside of the helm area (port/starboard). Double-check how much room you will be left with after installation so as you can move up/down the walkway to / from the bow. Also, you should be able to easily have access to back-plate these in that area. On the port side, you might need to install a 4" deckplate to access the bolts and backplate. Buy a matching deck plate to the ones on the boat, not a big deal.

Art,

I really would prefer to have hardtop/topgun style outrigger mounts to avoid how the Lee jrs intrude into the walkaround area (especially when they're layed out). Looking at photos of other 3070s, it appears as though all of them with outriggers have their bases welded into the top of the rear hardtop vertical pipe.

Thanks for the reply.

Doug - The F225's are plenty of power for the boat, I cruise at 34 MPH at 24 GPH with plenty of hole-shot. I think the F250's will provide better top-end speed which will be a benefit.

My boat has Rupp Top Gun riggers. They mount inside the rear support for the hardtop.

Congrats on the boat. IMO it's one of the best WA designs ever. Please report back on the performance of the F250's

Elusive,

What RPM would be required for the 34 MPH cruise? It looks like the picture your boat has bottom paint?

Thanks!

Doug - the boat does have bottom paint. Approx 4800 RPM yields 34 MPH (depends on loading and sea conditions)

Onewolf: Lots of pictures and specs of what you are looking for at www.yachtworld.com
I've been researching this model for a bit and have come up with a ton of pictures. I'm about ready to visit one in person.

Do a quick search there. Hope it helps.

My 3070 offshore Express has a pair of 18.5' Sailfish outriggers. I had never heard of them before (being a Rupp fan) but like them after using them only a few times. The load from the mast of the 'rigger transfers through a couple of sturdy-looking nylon/composite bushings, so I like the fact that they're electrically floating for electrolysis and lightning reasons, and it provides a good, metal free bearing surface.

They can be lowered to make it under a moderate bridge - they're lower than the radar. That may not be possible with other brands. I always feel silly getting a bridge opening to get outriggers under it.

They're attached to a plate welded to the framework of the hard top.
