What ever happened to the guy who was writing the book?
I would like to clarify a couple of things...
When I found this site I did not take the time to look around and get a feel for the depth of knowledge which exists here....my mistake and one I have apologized for numerous times. No one is more impressed with the wealth of knowledge found on this site more than I am. The truth is this...I spent 16 years working in the boat business as a guide, tournament fisherman, sales person and briefly as a dealer. I don't know everything there is to know about anything but I have seen the best and the worst the boating industry has to offer. My "book" could more accurately be described as a "booklet" designed to be read in a few hours. It is designed for the first or second time boat buyer who hasn't gained the knowledge to know why boat like a Regulator costs more than a Century. Hopefully I can help people understand how to evaluate a boat's price and quality for themselves rather than relying on the information provided by sales people or the boat companies themselves. The great majority of people who frequent this site are experienced boaters who will gain little from reading a book on boat buying(mine or anyone elses). Thus, you will not likely see the book promoted or for sale here. The book is not about me making money, I have 3 full time jobs now and while I am a long way from being wealthy, selling a few books over the internet isn't going to impact my finances greatly. The truth is this, I grew up in a hardworking lower middle class family. I don't like to see hardworking people taken advantage of by anyone. The great majority of boat dealers and sales people are honest folks who certainly have the right to make a profit on the boats they sell. What I do object to is finding the same 26' center console boat with an identical amount of horsepower priced at $48,000 in Destin Fl and $99,000 in Houston Tx. If that doesn't hit you as a little bit out of line, fine. From my own experience talking to sales people the last 8 months I can tell you that I found 80% to be honest and informative with competitive pricing. The other 20% were so uninformed, unprofessional and unscrupulous that I have included some of their statements in the book.
I would like to thank all the people who contribute to this site. I have a lifetime of experience fishing and boating in freshwater. Saltwater on the other hand is a new challenge and I have learned much from this site already.
Once again I will apologize for my first few intial post. The "book" was complete less a few pictures when I found this site. I am here only to increase my knowledge about saltwater boating and fishing. If you choose to believe otherwise there is nothing I can do about that. Hopefully, on occassion someone will have a question that I can help contribute some information on. I look forward to getting to know all of you over the coming months and appreciate those of you who have seen fit to overlook my first couple of post....

I would hope that TBG learned a few valueable lessons. The first one should be that when you walk into a place, don't slam the door then stomp your mud covered feet all over the place.

Hey Boatguy,
I am distressed that you replied in this thread. I wanted to see more fireworks! You killed that from happening! In all seriousness...nobody likes pomposity (real word?), and we are all cabin fevered.
And you have more than apologized. I look forward to any help anyone on the forum can provide me, as well as help I may provide others. Pay it forward is the mantra here.

Well said Sal,,,
Being in the buying stage I look forward to the Boat Guys comments and experience. And yes, he has apologized more than should be required.

Thanks guys,
I feel sorry for you guys up North. Here in Dallas it is 40 and raining, I can only imagine how miserable you guys must be up there. I am going to the Miami boat show next week and hope to get some pictures of some real warm beauties and maybe a few boats.....I will send any good pictures your way as soon as I get back.

I've got no problem with the boat guy either. My post at the top was in pure fun. I'm sure our buddy remembers I said he sounded like a pretty decent guy after the opening volley died down.

Hey TBG, I was thinking you were a great boat guy and a nice guy to boot too; that is until you brought up the fact of how crappy and cold it is up here in the north lands. Just kidding!
Seriously it feels like it's going to be forever till boating season is upon us again! AND that my friends does SUCK!

With The Boat Guy reformed I only have Trouty in the Bilge to lash at. Next thing you know, he'll turn pro-Bush and I'll be back to cleaning my reels for the rest of the winter.

Well, I like what the boat guy has to say. He got off to a rough start, but I like what he had to say in his last post. I could probably learn a lot about boat buying as I've only purchased one.

Team Binnion, thanks I will take you up on that offer to go fishing. I have bought all new saltwater tackle and it has never been used. To date I own the following complete rigs: 4-Penn 113h's with very stiff stand up rods, 2-Shimano baitrunners (5500 & 6500) 6'5" rods, 1-Garcia 7000, 1 Calcutta 700 6'5" rods, all brand new. I tried to charter out of Galveston with my father and brother in Sept. but we got blown out, I went to Pensacola in Jan. but the cold front arrived the same day, no charters going out. I have all this brand new gear and no fish, it sucks big time.
My brother even gave me a gaff for Xmas, so if I am not serious about buying a boat, then I am going to have alot of useless crap!
From what I can tell, the coast of Texas and Moorhead City NC rank as two of the consistently roughest places on earth. I repsect anyone fishing either place very often. I am still undecided about my choice for boats. It has pretty much come down to this. I can buy a new 24' Cape Horn for $52,500 with 200 HPDI's and a trailer. Or, I can buy a used Regulator 98-99' with the bullet proof OX66's for about the same price with all the electronics. I am claiming to know a little bit about buying boats. This make it very difficult to go buy a new boat and suffer the depreciation. I fell in love with the Regulator 26' the first time I climbed aboard but there is no way in hell I can afford a new one. I like almost everything about the Cape Horn but it is a little smaller boat and I know better than to buy new(depreciation). Add to this the fact that gas may be $2.50 a gallon by summer and one has to wonder what the price of any used boat without a HPDI, 4Stroke, or Opti will be by July. If gas goes up I am guessing the older less fuel efficient engine/boat combinations will be getting damn cheap by August. I am going to the Miami show with an open mind but I have pretty well made up my mind to buy a good clean used Regulator. I love the Hydra Sports and that was the first boat I ever owned so there is an emotional attachment but, they are heavy and while this makes them ride great it also uses more gas in the tow vehicle and on the water.(even on the calm days when you don't need that great ride) Even I will be interested to see how this turns out. My girlfriend is just sick of hearing about boats and wishes I would buy something/anyhting. They just don't understand do they boys........Thanks guys.........

TBG- After reading your comments, I thought it might be worth mentioning that I don't think Regs are considered lightweights. Good luck on your boat search.
