I tend to buy books faster than I can read them

This little volume was kicking around the house for awhile before I picked it up, but was then glad that I did. The author is David Getchell - he's been the editor of a few boating mags and is a founder of the Maine Island Trail Association. I would describe him as a real outdoorsman, who happens to prefer to experience the outdoors in small boats.
His style is very down to earth, yet knowledgeable. This is definitely not a book for those interested in the glamour & glitz aspects of boating. The book is a little dated, but I didn't think this detracted from it's value. It's a pretty comprehensive overview of boats and boating, focusing primarily on smaller boats, say from 12-20 feet in length. Some of the passages, for instance the one on inlet running, would pertain to any size boat though.
I really enjoyed his clear and direct style - a breath of fresh air in what can be a snooty room. He's an engaging guy to listen to and has a lot of knowledge to pass on in this work. Definitely recommended, I'd give it 4 out of 5 stars.
