My old 2000 247 with 5.0 EFI 250hp jackshaft to VP duoprop would do 39 kts on the GPS on flat water with full tank and 2 people (no rods, reels, ice, or other fishing stuff on board). On flat water, it would cruise about 27 kts at 3400-3500 rpm. Of course, these numbers would go down quite a bit once you got out in the ocean . . .
Sorry, with a jackshaft. The one I am looking at is bottom painted, has a hard top and three sided enclosure. Empty with three people on board we topped out at 37 mph at I think 4,400-4,500 rpm, without playing with the trim or tabs.
Mine was same, but no bottom paint. How many hours on this boat? What year? Did the guy have a lot of stuff on it? Could have something to do with the numbers you saw. This boat will definitely gain some more speed when you trim the drive up a little and put the tabs down some - probably would've hit 40 mph on flat water. I think, however, that the motor should spin up to 5000-5100 rpm at WOT. Did you check the condition of the props? Original set? Let me know if the boat you're looking at is down this way. I may be able to get you info on it.
No, the boat is local here. The props looked fairly dinged, and he had another set with a slightly different pitch. Not sure what you call them B-4 and B-5?? The boat is a 98 with 350 hours on it. It felt strong and there was no hint of hesitation in the motor. The boat was very lightly loaded, no ice, drinks, etc and 3/4 tank of fuel. Had the windows up. Flat water and heavy rain. We only ran it around for 15 minutes or so and I plan a more complete inspection once I know I have the finance side straight (once my wife says OK ).
Boat has gps, fish finder and radar.
Capt Dan. I got a 96 24 Albe I/O - no jackshaft. My boat cruises nicely at 25-27 knots (not mph) burning about 12.5 GPH on the floscan. WOT, I get 45-4600 RPMs and have seen 34 knots. Realize that my engine has 1100 hours on it, so I am sure that the new models with the vortec engine might even be able to turn a size bigger prop than the B5 I turn with my old 260HP.
You should not see 5000 on these engines. That boat might be underpropped. My boat is turning B5 props, and my numbers are with a full bag of gas 2 persons and gear. The 24 Albemarle is a strong boat and I am sure you will not go wrong with any of them. I got mine on the trading dock for sale because I want to upgrade to an Albe 26 or CC25, but if I don't sell it, I plan on keeping it and adding some more upgrades to it. It truly is a boat for life and is so very easy to maintain it. If you have any other 24 Albe specific questions, you can email me directly. Good luck on your search.
Thanks everyone for all the input, I found one that is in great shape. 1998, hard top, 3 sided enclosure, bottom painted and stored on a lift, good flush mounted electronics (including radar and auto pilot), windlass, swim platform, two sets of props (I think B-4 and B-5, both aluminum and in fair to poor condition)very clean and 347 hours.
Can aluminum props be repaired? Any idea on what they cost?
Other options are coaming pads, spreader lights, Lee skiff 16' gunnel mounted outriggers, motorbox cushion and rocket launcher. Just about the only option not on this boat is a head (which I will have to have installed) and no trailer.
Of course, my wife is holding on to the checkbook with a deathgrip!!

I just re-powered with a new 280 hp Volvo in November and switched to B-4 props. I cruise around 25 kts @ 3200-3500 revs. Flat out will do about 39.5 kts (not MPH) turning about 4900.
The aluminum props can be re-built, but the duo-props are a little trickier than traditional single prop applications. For one, as far as I know, Volvo will not release the specs to anyone, so how do you know if they have been re-built to original specs? You will have to check around in your area - there are a few shops around that will work on them. Word of advice - don't bother with stainless props on the Duo-Prop - very expensive and usually causes electrolysis problems.
A new set will run around $700 or so at the V-P dealer. There are a few on line co.'s that will sell them for less. You have to by V-P props - there are none available from other sources (i.e. Michigan Wheel, etc).
StreamWeaver, do you know why stainless presents an electrolysis problem with this set up? Is it more so than with other boats or is it just the typical dissimilar metals issue?
I bet that new Volvo is nice! Straight I/O or jack shaft?
I've got an 87 repowered with a 2000 model Marine Power 5.7L Vortec rated at 315hp at the crank, so I'm guessing it's equivalent to the Volvo 270hp. I'm running B-5 aluminum props and the best I've seen is 34 knts (39 mph)@ WOT (GPS)loaded down for an offshore trip but while still in the ICW. Don't know where these other guys get 39 - 40 knts from. They must have the 320hp MPI Volvo. I get 21 - 22 knts @ 3,000 rpm, 24 - 25knts @3,200 and anywhere from 25 to 27.5 knts @ 3,400 rpm depending on sea state. Average roughly 2 mpg. This is a pre-jacksharft boat with original DP-290 I/O. She ain't fast but shure is comfortable.
You can mount a thru-hull or in-hull in the jackshaft compartment between the motor box and the transom of that '98. Lots of clear space in there. I had a transom mount 'ducer and it worked just fine. Also had the marine head option - it was only used a few times over 3.5 years, but no problems.
I get the same numbers hblac gets on my 1996 24 Albe. I got a thru hull transducer. It is located pretty much in front of the powersteering pump.
I like to also know how some of the other 24 Albe owners are getting the faster cruise and top end. I am turning B5 props. Are the B4 the way to go??? What am I missing here?
Hi Frank! Long time no talk. I think my boat had B4's, but I'm not sure.
Dan - if you look at the port side of the boat, the thru-hull is on the side and basically under the passenger seat outboard of the live well, not under the chine. There should be a matching thru-hull on the starboard side that is the drain from the cooler under the helm seat. When the factory ran the thru-hull for the head, they put it forward of the live well thru-hull. The openings for all are on the sides of the boat right at the waterline.
