Default Adding oil injection to older outboard engines?

Is this possible? Could you retrofit an oil injection system to an older carbed V-4 engine instead of mixing the fuel and oil in the tank? Is there a manufacturer who makes a bolt on kit for this?

Aside from the SPL series OMC sold, I don't think there was a mix your own V-4 produced in the last 20 years. So, I doubt it. Mix the oil yourself and stay with K.I.S.S.

Yeah you can do it, but it's expensive. What exactly do you have, model/year?

I have a 1982 Evinrude 90 V-4...it's a great motor for it's age, but I also don't want to spend a ton of money for a kit that will only be used on a 23-24 year old motor that might blow up. It runs great and has no starting problems unless it's cold (but hey, it's a 2 stroke) and no death rattle.

100% agree with afishinado, K.I.S.S. , the rudes & johnsons had a cacume pump where Zuki's were run by their crank shaft. The never had the possibility o failing compared with rudes for the simple design of turning when crank turned. I am not a mech and this was told to me by a good mechanic so I am just re-running his words. You have almost 24 years on an v4 eng, why take the chance now. I seriously doubt that you can get a reliable/proven after market pump. Besides do they offer a warranty that in case your eng dies from their product that they will pay for the damage! Hey in Russia you can fly a Mig, but then how proven/safe is it ? Just because it is or it can be done, does not guarantee longevity.

I'd call that a great motor PERIOD... Last thing I would do is change anything!

I agree. There are people removing the oil pumps from newer engines to avoid problems.....myself included.

Keep your boating simple. Mix the oil and fuel. Engines need oil! A "little" extra oil will not cause a problem, but not enough will destroy an engine.
