Default Hot hubs. How hot is to hot?

I pulled my boat for the first time with the trailer (electric) brakes connected. What a difference, seemed like I didn't even have the boat behind me.

When I got back I felt the trailer hubs like I always do. I expected the axle with the brakes on it would be significantly hotter but I wasn't expecting them to be as hot as they were. I could touch them but no way I could leave my hand on them without getting burned.

How hot is to hot? Should I be using a high temp waterproof grease on this axle?

id say thats too hot... if it gets to the point you couldnt touch it... that certainly would be too hot.

Part of the answer depends on how hard, how recently and for how long you had just braked. The hubs with the brakes will get pretty hot. Maybe not to the point of burning you but mine have been pretty uncomfortable to touch before.

I had recently braked from 70MPH to a stop within 3-4 minutes before I checked them.

I understand they should be hot but maybe not that hot. I repacked the bearings at the start of the season with standard waterproof bearing grease. Is there any need to use a high temp grease? I could smell the grease when I got near the trailer.

Electric brakes, huh? Do you think the could be a 'little' on with you foot off the brake? With the trailer parked, left up on side then the other to see if the wheels are turning freely. If not, either the brake is on or the bearings are too tight. Should be warm to the touch; unless you just had a panic stop.

About 103 degrees, but you have to be careful if you've been drinking.... Oh wait, I thought you said hot tubs.

Next time you're out look for a place where you can safely coast to a stop, like an uphill grade with a good shoulder, or the top of an exit ramp. Then get out and do a quick comparison.

I carry a infrared, laser pointer thermometer on long trips to check all bearings at stops.

Typical check on my tandem with alloy wheels and weighing in at about 4,600# is 119f to 124f after 75 mph run, air temp 95, dry weather.

Rear hub temps on the tow vehicle were around 154f. Have read somewhere that up to 175f is ok.
