Default Offshore fishing in NC and SC

Hello to all,

i have been reading and learning from all of you and i want to say first, Thank You for all the great insights and advice.

My wife and I are new to offshore fishing. We bought a larger boat last year and really enjoyed fishing further offshore. we are hooked! We fished mostly out of Little River, SC last year. We took 3 trips to the gulf stream in the fall, which was over 60 nautical miles for us out of Little River Inlet, and had fairly good luck on each trip. We are wondering how far it is out of the Morehead city area to the gulf stream (and elsewhere on the coast)? I have heard all my life that the fishing is much better from Morehead City to Hatteras than anywhere else. Is there in truth to this? We want to dock our boat somewhere between Myrtle Beach and Maneto and would apprecaite any advice that we could get. We are curently renting dry storage space out of Little River, SC. We want to do more gulf stream adn fishing and we are looking for a happy medium between good fishing, distance, and sea conditions. We also really enjoyed the King fishing at the Jungle in the fall. (very Hot Bite!)

Happy Fishing!

From Hatteras deep water is about 24 miles. If you go up to Oregon Inlet (65 miles generally north) its about 34. The stream wonders but can generally be found at he 100 fathom mark or reasonably close to it.

The bite in Hatteras is great in the spring and very good in the fall, unfortunately it falls pretty flat during the heat of summer. By sometime around mid to late june you would want to be going out of Oregon Inlet and as the summer progresses you'd fish farther and farther to the north, until by the time the White Marlin were thick you'd be fishing with a lot of boats from Virginia.

The Big Rock is 42 miles from Morehead although you can catch a lot of wahoo and dolphin at half that distance offshore.

Think of it this way; Morehead is a dolphin and wahoo mecca and Oregon Inlet is yellowfin tuna central.

little river is not a bad option either. you have the georgetown hole, winyah scrab, 100-400,black jack and the steeples. did nt even touch on the king holes ie horeshoe 1 n 2, the cape fear river channel....imho...
good luck

What Tom said...

NW Places are about 12-15 miles out of MC -- roughly 55-70' water, lotsa dolphin, king, wahoo. Buoy 14 is 25 out -- same species plus a few sails and a few yellowfin -- 90-120' water. You don't get to 150' until you're within a few miles of the BR. I've seen the GS color/temp break inside Buoy 14 but it meanders considerably.

Check out the performance bulletins on the Yam website -- they'll give you a ballpark reference for what you can expect.

Ditto what Eric and Tom said. You can get into fantastic dolphin, and king action as close as NW places and that’s only 12 miles out. Between Big 10/Little 10 and R14, you have shots at great dolphin, king and wahoo action all summer with a chance of even a sailfish. When its on fire you can catch gaffer dolphin right off the beach starting at “trawler wreck”, trolling due east. After that you can fish from R14 to the 90' Drop and its show time. The Big Rock is right up the road from there. Sometimes when the action is slow at the Big Rock, you can find killer temp breaks closer in like at R14 and the 90' Drop. Summer is AWESOME fishing out of Cape Lookout and the places Eric and Tom allude to. Now if you want to cut off some distance, you simply cross over the Cape Lookout shoals and fish over on the East Side. There are some killer gulf stream eddies that show up during mid to late summer and continue through the fall over there, and the water depths get a little deeper, a little faster. What's funny is that none of us have even mentioned how good the fishing is it due south of Beaufort Inlet. That’s another story!!

thanks for the advice. if you guys or anyone else can think of aditional advice, please post. What about this time of year? where are the best places to fish? Is the gulf productive? How about in the spring (which month) does the fishing start cranking and how close? if you had to choose between docking your boat....out of little river or morehead?
