Default Good shallow water depth sounder?

I am looking for a good depth sounder for mostly shallow water. I don't fish, so I just need accurate bottom depth. Kind of irks me that they are all called "fish-finders" nowadays. I do want the scrolling bottom contour, not just a numeric readout. Any ideas for good ones?

I think Lowrance has better shallow water performance than Garmin. Had two on my bass boat & they held shallow bottoms better than the two Garmins I have now, not that they are bad units. Eagle is Lowrance's off-brand, and generally offers identical performance for a bit less.

You can get a digital read out, depth only unit from a couple of different companies. They are approximately 2 1/2" diameter unit that can be mounted in your dash easy enough. These can readliy be found at most marine supply stores such as: Boaters' World, West Marine, Bass Pro Shops, Cabella, etc.

Example can be found here ---> http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs...-1/10001/64968

A Furuno RD30 with the smart sensor will read down to 2 ft. If mounted as a shoot thru it will even read in turbulent wake water.

Just before I am about to hit bottom my depth finder/fish liar displays a big ? Lucky for me water visability is seldom less than 10'. I like cruising skinny water.
