What should a 50 hour service on a Yanmar 315 cost?
Just had the first service on our 24 valve Yanmar 315 engine in our Legacy 28. Since the boat was delivered to the Hinckley yard in Stuart and they are a Yanmar dealer, we had them do the service. $1100 plus later, it seemed to me to be outlandish, however, they claim it is normal for the first service on this inboard.
Access is absolutely no problem on the boat.
Hope someone has some idea of whether this is reasonable or not.

According to my Yanmar service manual, there are five required items at the 50 hour service interval. Drain fuel tank, drain fuel filter, replace engine oil, replace engine oil filter and check and supply electrolyte in battery. Perhaps your deeler did some additional work.
Since I have two of those engines and my dealer probably charges about what yours does I do my own service. I installed an electric oil extraction pump. Since my Yanmars already had hoses on the oil pan fittings it was a breeze. It only takes my about 15 minutes and $60.00 [5 gallons of RotellaT and 2 oil filters] to change oil and filters, start to finish.
By the way, your 315s are a Toyota block and came with Toyota 90915-30002 oil filters installed. Many Toyota dealers can order these for you at about $9.00. There's no need to pay Yanmar $35.00 for their repainted filters.

Don't forget that if these have the usual ZF63a gears, first service on them may also be due. ZF usually recommends 25 hours but I've seen many do it at the same interval as the engine. The filter kits for the gears alone about $60 a pop and they are proprietary - no one else has them. I'd bet labor, filters, and fluid for one gear would be around $150.
BTW - I highly doubt anyone is draining fuel tanks at first service.

jdf,
Yanmars specs my engine for 10.5L which is right at 3 gallons. There's roughly a quart that doesn't drain out so 2 1/2 gallons gets me just past the fill line. I run the boat for an hour or two and top off if necessary.
jav,
I'm glad I don't buy my parts where you do. I pay about $30 each for the filters for the ZF63 gears and I thought that was outrageous for the tiny little filter.
I agree that nobody is draining fuel tanks but that's definately an item in the Yanmar service manual.

Welcome to the world of "you better learn how to do it yourself" or have deep pockets. I bet the 59 hour check includes valve adjustment. Maybe you should have asked what was included in the 50 hour check. One thing I know about yannies you better learn where the engine zincs are and keep checking on them.

Very true. I had a small Yanmar in a sailboat once and the heat exchanger zinc required changing every 3 months or so, regardless of use.

They told me that they did a valve adjustment which they say is required at 50 hours. That is what took so long. They did not drain any fuel tanks.
They have not yet given me a detailed list of what services they performed.
Here in WA, mechanics are required by law to provide you with a written estimate before the work is done with a "not to exceed" number, and must provide an itemized bill before you're even allowed to pay them.
Re: What should a 50 hour service on a Yanmar 315 cost?
Service manual on the 6LP calls for valve adjustment at 250 hours or 1 year. I guess if you only put 50 hours on in the first year, a valve adjustment is called for.

holy smokes, $1100! and that's for one engine right? are these typical diesel maintenance costs? i had no idea. i guess i better stick with my simple 2 smokers than i can maintain myself. or maybe i better go to diesel mechanic school before i ever buy a bigger boat.

They have some B&@@# to say that in a manual. How the heck does the valve lash go out of spec if the boat is sitting for 1 year or 10 years??
I can understand saying that for fluids or other maintenance items that may degrade over time - but valve clearance adjustment.
