Default Newbie 150 HDPI engine oil question

At the risk of sounding like an idiot, in addition to adding oil into the boat oil tanks, is there another place in the engine that oil needs to be added?

Unless I am missing something, the answer to your question is no.

Default Newbie 150 HDPI engine oil question

I had a low oil message showing on my tach on one engine. The marina had done some work to repair an oil leak and I thought they had filled the tanks afterward. When I asked, they said they had filled them but that the the tank in the engine was empty. Not sure what that means...

Does that motor have a secondary oil holding / surge tank under the motor bonnet?

You need to add oil directly to the fuel during breal-in. Should be running double oil for specified times and RPMs. Check with your dealer or manual.

Nimrod, that is incorrect. You do NOT add any oil to the tank during break-in. Keep the oil reservoir full and refer to the manual for recommended rpm ranges.

Default Newbie 150 HDPI engine oil question

Tuna,
Pull the cover off your engine. There is a small remote tank on the left side of the engine. On the tank are 2 marks (high & low). Make sure there is oil to the top line. There is also a switch right beside it. This switch is only to be used when the tank on your boat is close to empty. This tank has a small reserve on it and by holding the switch up it allows you to fill the engine tank so you can get home. Hope this helps.

Moonrunner-
Is there a time when I would ever have to manually fill the remote tank or is the oil in the remote tank drawn automatically from the main tank?
Thanks for the help.

Tuna,
The engine remote tank draws oil from your boat tank. The only time you should ever have to add oil to the engine tank is if you ran out of oil on the boat thank. Where as, there is a small reserve built in which allows you to use the switch on the side of the engine to fill the engine tank. Make sure there is oil in your boat tank. Check to see if the oil on the engine tank is at the top mark.

Hmmmmmmm. I stand corrected. Could have sworn that was the procedure I was instructed to follow, even with the oil linkage set for heavier oil.

WE double oiled.. per the Yamaha cert mechanic at my dealer for the first tank full on each side... ( 120 gallons ) ..ie. we dropped two gallons of oil in and then topped off the tanks. Did they smoke a bit more.. sure... but hell..900 hrs and they run long and strong... sure as hell cant hurt.

Blue Marlin- Despite your good fortune (900 hours with no problem) if it can't hurt why does the engine have a big sticker on it specifically telling you not to add oil to fuel during break in ? It seems to me they may have some evidence to the contrary.

Bluemarlin....just curious....did your engines, either one, stall at low idle with the double oil?

My outboard is a '98. Some things may have been learned and changed in the last few years. Perhaps adding oil to the fuel puts a hit on the 02 sensor.

As for me...... Just following orders.

Nope those motors.. 900 hours x 2... for a total of 1800 hrs between them... have run like champs other than the fuel pump problem last fall.

Sticker about double oil... tell me where. Id like to read it.. remember now.. mine are 1998 carbed 150's....

Never had a problem with stalling the motor at low speed. with or WITHOUT the double oil. To each his own.

You do add extra oil in the fuel tank on all of the Yamaha engines except the HPDI engines. HPDI engines have a high pressure direct injection system (HPDI) that does not like oil in the fuel due to the type injectors being used. The fuel is injected directly on top of the pistons while the oil is injected just behind the reed valves so it can coat the bearings, pistons, rings, etc., If the oil warning light is coming on either the remote (large tank in the boat is low) or the oil is not transfering to the engine tank.

Just to let you know, Yamaha does not have it's certification program completely finished. They still need to add 2 classes, so there are no certified Yamaha mechanics.
HPDIs do not need 50/1 for breakin and added oil could cause fouled plugs and injector damage. This info is in the owner's manual and Yamaha has been preaching this to the dealers since the HPDI came out.
