I heard aquasport was being discontinued. Does anyone know the facts?

Re: aquasport discontinued?
This was announced quite a bit ago officially by the parent company. What has never been answered is whether all the existing boats will have any warranty service or not.

They can't walk away from the warranty. It is a legal obligation (although contingent in nature). The only way they can limit it is to file for bankruptcy protection, but then all the assets of the company are marshalled and all the owners have unliquidated claims agains the estate. A portion of the remaining assets will be allocated to warranty claims and held in reserve until the claims ripen.

Just a thought or two...

Re: aquasport discontinued?
from what I understand they are going to retool and come back out. Their boat designs haven't been updated in a while. Also their lines were similar to wellcraft so mabey thier relauch will be in a differnt direction.

Re: aquasport discontinued?
As an Aquasport fan, I think Genmar did the best thing it could do. Hopefully they'll give up on the brand and someone will buy who will do something good with it again. To see the quality of the Hialeah plant boats versus the Sarasota (?) ones, it's a shame to see what the bean counters did to Coburn and, Sargent's quality and, innovation. Aquasport lost it's way. Here's hoping they find it again. It's a testament to the design and, construction to see boats almost 40 years old still out there earning their stripes (and stripers) on the weekends.

Re: aquasport discontinued?
i don't Aquasport technically going out of business or is Genmar just not going to make it any more?? Are we looking at perhpas another "Bombardier buys out defunct OMC" situation here with a potential Aquasport buyer??

Re: aquasport discontinued?
I would love to see the brand return to its roots, small 17-25' center consoles. I think the market is ready for no-nonsense boats that are utilitarian, solidly built and fuel efficient with a fishing focus. If you think about it, these are the boats that got us hooked. The industry's focus on bigger and bigger boats with more and more amenities, may result in more profit per unit, but it does nothing to attract the entry level buyer to a practical hull that will keep them in boating instead of driving them out in frustration.

Re: aquasport discontinued?
I thnk crunch is right - obviously genmar is trying to figure out where it fits in their model line as all of their CC fish brands are moving up the scale - Seaswirl is now mid tier, Wellcraft a bit higher and Hydra at the top of their chain. The only place Aqua could fit unless they want to stick it on top of hydra (which I don't think customers would follow - look at the VW 70K Phaeton) is to go the SeaPro route - a good value line. It will be interesting to see what they do with it.

Re: aquasport discontinued?
are older aquasport osprey boats respected? wood? built strong? good project boat? any reservations of buying an older one from the mid 80's?

Re: aquasport discontinued?
I buy several older Aquasports a year and rebuild them. They have a big following, and people love thier simple design.

Re: aquasport discontinued?
Hello all,
I built Aquasport 225 and 245/250 Ospreys from '94 to '00. Excellent boats, no wood. I was sad to see Genmar discontinue. Why? I have no clue. But should those of you out there own an Osprey or an Explorer, and have any questions, drop me a line.

Glen E,
Nice to see your boat! What year 32? Wired the helms on 29/32/35 Scarab Sports in 99/00.

Re: aquasport discontinued?
I just picked up an '02 Osprey 190 in the spring that was flooded in Hurricane Katrina. Put a new (to me) motor on her after I cleaned her all up. Had to replace much of the wiring/terminals/switches/breakers, but she is like new now.
This was a major upgrade from my old 18' Alum CC Starcraft, and it was a joy to get into every nook and cranny of her cleaning and fixing things. Learned alot. Now she just goes and goes like the bunny.
Any particulars I need to look out for????

Re: aquasport discontinued?
I loved those Ospreys and smaller Explorers!!! Great boats. They have certainly held their value well.
Sure hope they can make a comeback.

Re: aquasport discontinued?
What you have is the Osprey 190/190 CCF, identical models of Aquasport and Wellcraft lines. I left in '00, but the most significant thing was the fact that in the early boats, we had to cut out part of the aft transom wall and put in an insert so the motor could tilt all the way up. Guess someone didn't think about that. The good thing about the Aquasport is that it is all composite, no wood. Wellcraft was still using wood in the stringers and subfloors at my time there.

If I remember correctly, the console is open underneath while laying on your back in front of the leaning post or ped seats. Pretty easy to wire. I will give you a piece of advice, though. Keep her for a few years, and at the same time, keep an eye out for the same vintage 200 Osprey. More room, and better accessability. A traditional Aquasport Hullform, and will take a 200 with no problem. Another awesome Wellcraft/Genmar/Aquasport model is the Wellcraft 20 Fish, derived from the V-20.

Have fun with it. Catch some fish! If you've replaced your main accessory harness and engine harness, your pretty much good to go. Don't worry about the transom. 2-part "Pour Foam". Strong as concrete!

That was over three years ago, where have you been?

Re: aquasport discontinued?
Yeah, I think the last boats they made were in 05 or 06.

bt4264 09-18-2008 05:50 AM

Re: aquasport discontinued?
blacktooth, his original post was 3 years ago :)

seabob, you are correct on the open console. I spent ALOT of time in that exact position you describe. But it worked out great. My boat has a swim deck/splashwell, so it has no problem tilting up. Also you can't get to the motor while you are in the boat unless you "climb over the back wall". Makes me feel better with kids onboard.
I have really been impressed with this boat and have kept my eye out for other models but haven't ran into one yet. MOF, I have only seen one other Aquasport where we go and it is a much older one.
Thanks for the info.

Re: aquasport discontinued?
How are the newer Genmar AS's? Was interested in a late model 235 Osprey CC. Had read (probably here) that the 235 hull design was an AS original and not a Wellcraft or HS knockoff. But, with a 19* deadrise it could be a rough rider.
