need to repower twin 250 Yamahas. Two friends are going to give up pairs of 2001 250's w/ 200 +/- hours. Probable cost, $12,000 ? OPtion for me is go F250's @ what.... $35,000? .. so here's the old argument... is it worth it to pay for more fuel and mechanic costs, with older engines, rather than buying new with warranty and fuel efficiency? Consider the $23,000 delta....between old FI's and new 4 strokes... tough one
If money isn't that big of an issue go with the newer twin 4-strokes.
However, that 23K "divide" could buy you FOUR more older engines. That's a LOT of mechanic time. With only 200 hours on the engines, those are still newborn fresh -- assuming a mechanic checks them out, it would save you a lot of money.
Me personally, I'd go new. I like having the warranty, new engine smell, etc -- not to mention all the quietness, no smoke, etc of the 4-strokes.
How old is the boat, what is it worth? Are you going to sell it with-in the next few years? If so, I would go used, because you wont get $23,000 more for it with the newer engines. Ed
1993 Marlin 350 SF original power. Boat is in exceptional in condition... I wont sell it, in fact I just bought it. My actual boat is pictured on Marlin's website, a direct aerial shot. I am 3rd owner and I know the other 2 very well/
The Yamaha OX66 is one of the most reliable outboard motors on the planet.
It would be a no-brainer for me. $23,000.00 buys a lot of gas, oil, and routine maintenance.
4-strokes are nice, but not $23,000.00 nice.

Both used pairs are OX66 Saltwater Series one on a Jupiter 31 open... the other on a Parker 26? 28? anyway, it's 6K lbs and the Parker owner is dropping to twin 200 hp HPDI's

I would agree hands down that if you are confident of the history of the motors I'd go with the ox66's from a financial perspective, unless money is no object.
That said, I would assume the newer 4-strokes are more fuel efficient, though how much so I don't know. Would you need the additional range offered by the new motors? I know a guy who repowered to Cummins from gas big blocks because he needed the range- even though it wasn't cost effective from a "payback" perspective for him...
