Just bought (today) a 1996 23 Regulator that had twin 1996 Yamaha 150 2 strokes( which I have already sold). I am going to repower with either a F225, F250, or a 300HPDI. I am scared the F225 is underpowered, the F250 is alot of $$$$$ , and I have found a great deal on a 300HPDI. SHould I jump on the 300HPDI or should I wait for a true four stroke?

Probably good advice above from some solid THT contributers... But, The older I get the less I know. Due to my recent experiences, personally I wouldn't buy a direct injection gasoline engine of any type or brand.
Good Luck!!!!

If only you would have known sooner... There was a guy with twin F150's with ~100 hours on the Trading Dock, with a price of ~$17k (taken off of a Reg 24).
I would go with the F250 if buying a single, or twin F150's if you would consider twins.
Nothing against 2-strokes, but I wouldn't want a Z250 or Z300 due to potential headaches and resale.

How about a suzuki 250? I think they are cheaper and it sounds like you will need new controls and gauges anyway. There was a guy selling twin 150 4 strokes at a great price. I think it was on this board?

Twin f150's would be great, otherwise F250 would be my choice.I think the boat does about 43 mph wide open with the f225. Great boat, the best 23 footer out there IMO

Twin F150s or Twin 150 HPDIs....you are already rigged for twins...by the time you redo the wiring, cables, controls, dash, fill and redrill the transom, etc...you won't end up saving too much $$$.

I am assuming you didn't mention twins in your original post because a single would be less $.. You might be able to get a deal on 150HPDI's since they are no longer producing them.
As for a single, my short list would be a Verado or 250 Etec, the F250 would pull 3rd choice... As for the 300HPDI, I would have to have lots of confidence in my Yamaha dealer, I've heard a lot of horror stories here on the big HPDI's... But haven't heard of any problems personally, and I can think of 6 or 7 guys that love'm to death, no problems....

A close friend purchased a new 24 Cape Horn CC last year with 256 Gallon fuel capacity outfitted with a Yamaha 300 HPDI. The boat was slow, not very economical and when loaded and sat nose down at the dock. He brought it back to the dealer and paid the difference between the 300 and twin 200 HPDI'S. The boat is quick, more fuel efficient ( he can get 2 MPG at a respectable speed), and the boat sits the way it should. He's very happy with his decision to go with twins. Hope this helps. Jim
