Default Fin on lower unit is gone

Guys,

I noticed the other day that on my Mercury Saltwater 225 Optimax that my little fin that is on the lower unit to help keep the boat running straight is gone. Not sure what these are called, Trim Tab Anodes --Maybe, anyway I have a couple of questions:

1) Don't know how long this has been off, how does this affect performance and can you create any damage to the engine by running with it off?

2) Where would one go to get one of these replaced and how much do they cost?

3) Do they just screw on? Looks like there are threads where a bolt could screw up in there.

4) How do you keep them on there? Use loctite or something, cause it must have vibrated off.

Thanks,

Rich

that is called a sacrificial anode, they will be eaten away over time, there readily available at any Boater's World or West marine and they cost $100 million dollars

I would think that 10 bucks would probably cover one....

Yes, those things are expensive, you'd be better off buying a whole 'nother lower unit, LOL, JK!

Yes, the good old sacrificial anode, you could go without it and watch your motor dissolve into rust in front of your very eyes and get a wicked arm workout from the excessive torque-steer as that fin helps to counteract the tendency of the clockwise-rotation of the prop.

Either go to your Mercury Dealer or to any old Worst Marine/Boat US and for under $20, get a brandy-new one.

They are held in by a bolt, if you go to Merc, the bolt will come with the lock washer and lock-tite already on it so it won't fall off, I know because mine fell off one time too since I didn't put loctite on the threads.
Good luck.

i dont think you ever had one.

dunno if the different years are different but my '04 225 opti doesnt have one. if you look at the cavitation plate you will see there is no room for one. the prop goes almost to the end of it.

here's a pic:

Thanks for the advice. There was definitely something there because you can see where in use to be and the threads for where the bolt screwed into it.
