I've been told that it's not a good idea to shrink wrap a boat with an Awlgrip hull. The shrink wrap traps moisture and ruins the paint. Can anyone confirm that?

If vented the shrink wrap should not be a problem for and Awlgripped hull. I think the potential damage to the paint comes from abrasion where the shrink wrap and/or straps/fasteners may rub against the hull. Scratches could/will occur as the wrap moves around in the wind. Just make sure to have lots of venting on all sides - I used the dryer vents that you see on houses - provides lots of venting and the hood keeps water out - a couple bucks each at a home center.

I do it for outdoor winter storage. Maybe not as much of an issue where you are down south.

you pay over $200 to cover your boat for a single time?

why not get a good cover and use it several times?

what advantage does the shrink wrapping provide over a quality cover?

also have you guys thought about trying to buy the stuff in bulk and doing several boats.

man I sure do love living where it warm

Can you say ripoff? I normally have access to inside storage but the yard is rebuilding that shed this winter so it's outside & shrinkwrap for our boat. Just rec'd a loveletter from the yard saying, " 2005 Shrinkwrap (only) Rates: Sailboats & small Open Boats... $28/ft. Cruiser/Express Boats..... $30/ft Flybridge-type boats......$33/ft. Boats with a Tower .....$ 37/ft. Our's is a 27''er with a small marlin tower so that will be $999 for shrinkwrap. That plus the outside storage fee makes it more expensive than inside storage if it were available. Such a deal.

Does your boat have to be shrink wrapped at the factory and I am charged $909.00? Do you think I can decline the wrap?

I've been quoted between $10 and $12 a foot depending on which yard you talk to. So, to cover my boat at $200 I opted for a custom cover from Fisher Canvas in NJ. It cost me $675 with the early 10% discount otherwise it would have been $750. They do nice work and I figure the payback is 3 years.

Their url is here:

My prior boat, a 2003 Trophy 1802, had a semi custom sunbrella cover I purchased from coversearch.com and was a great buy. That boat didn't have the hard top so it was basically an off the shelf cover for them. What I like better about the Fisher cover is it goes down quite far on the hull protecting everything.

That would be $180 in my marina. My Sea Hunt Triton 220 with t-top etc. will run me $198...

Best,

Awlgrip is a type of paint. I don't know what kind of boat you have, but very few fiberglass boats come painted. The vast majority come with a gel coat finish...

Wow. Read this thread to compare cost of shrink wrapping. Read Mole2's post and called fisher canvas. $444 + Taxes and shipping for a cover for a 17' Mako...ready in 4 weeks. Here in Westchester County NY IU am paying $15/ft or $255. I think I am going with these guys....checked out there website and the product looks high quality, plus the woman on the phone was very fast and eager to give me a quote. Took all of 90 seconds after she asked me a series of questions about add-ons to my hull.
