If someone were to develop a new technology allowing you to determine quickly, easily, and accurately whether or not there are hazardous (health threatening) bacteria levels in your boat's water supply, would you consider using a $5-10 product assuring your safety and peace of mind as a viable purchasing option? Thank you for your input!
no, absolutely no interest....i carry on 4 gal
of distilled water for each weekend...this pro-
duct offers me nothing....further, as a physician i can say that the whole concept is
bullshit...salmonella and vibrio species have
minimal effective doses in the hundreds or less
for virulent organisms...norwalk virus and
giardia probably less than that...the wide range
of organisms which are capable of causing human
illness is so varied and of such a tiny number
that quick and easy equals "ok" doesnt compute..
also, toxins from organisms, in the absence of
the organism itself, can cause serious ingested
disease!....soap residue, chemicals and pesticides from groundwater contamination, and
other poisonous materials are equally dangerous
and are implied to be tested also?....for myself
i will continue to put my confidence in distilled water in individually sealed gallon
jugs. dan
Probably. But I think you'd do better offering it as an after-market item too.
There are a few non-marine products already suitable for this already and short-cruisers that I know drink bottled water and use the tanked water for washing and flushing only.
After you start up your business, register as a vendor and you can tell us all about it.
I got hung-up on something while writing this, that's why it seems redundant to the above entries.
I would have no personal interest in a "quick and easy go ahead and drink it test" as with things like this you usually get what you pay for...consider that plus there's a 30-50% (more?) margin built into this product somewhere..which reduces the "meat" you're paying for to magic + marketing.
However...Dry Doc, There is a water purification system(Seagull IV) put out by General Ecology (http://www.generalecology.com/) that is said to clean fresh water up quite well. I contacted them a while back and a guy got back to me with a 'plan' that he says some folks use in fresh water like the Great Lakes. Using offshore (more northern) water people fill up their fresh water tank from the lake and dose it with an appropriate amount of chlorine bleach. They then use the Seagull IV to do a final purification on the water from the tank. He says the bleach takes care of any bugs and the filter removes everything else plus the chlorine...fact...fiction...? What they don't mention is heavy metals removal which is still a concern.
If someone were to develop a boating forum with over 16,000 registered members would you consider joining it's Captain's Club for $29.95 in order to do your market research?
kevin,
the chlorine will do the whole job on the
bugs, and the filters do a fine job on the
chlorine and other CHEMICAL things...the water
you described would be excellent on all counts...dan
Can't believe I just waisted 5 minutes of my time reading this post. At least I'm at work and getting paid for it!!!!! Hey, if I put water in a bottle and tried to sell.......never mind, it has no chance of working.
