Yamtech,
I just got back from the boat 10 minutes ago.
I still have the problem.
I checked the yellow wire at the tach's. Here's what I found.
When I turned my batteries on, and BEFORE starting the port engine I had zero VDC at the yellow wire's of both tachs and both buzzers work properly.
After running the motors for a few minutes and turning the ign switches to OFF, I had zero VDC on the starboard tach but on the Port tach yellow wire I read 2.25VDC
I turn the battery switches to off and right back on again and I have zero volts at both tachs yellow wires, and both buzzers work porperly. Start the port engine, shut it off. Turn the ign switch (port) back ON and the buzzer keeps beeping and I get the 2.25VDC again.

Whatta you think ??

I really appreciate your time and help.

One other question. What does CDI stand for ??
I see it in my service manual but haven't got a clue what it is.

Dennis

Yamtech,
Would you mind emailing me at jetmech88@comcast.net so I can get your email ID.
It would be more convenient emailing directly. Of course we would share anything we learn regarding this problem with THT board readers.
Dennis,

is it possible to swap gauges between engines? if you can and the problem persists on the same gauge the gauge is probably faulty. I don't know much about Yamaha systems but I do know something about microcontrollers. On the tach input to the gauge the leads signal is pulled low( referenced to -) thru a resistor (10K or so) so the input doesn't float. here is where the problem probably is. wrong spec on the resistor or a bad Surface mount resistor solder joint.

SilverSurfer,
Thanks for the help. Actually I did swap the tachs and the problem remained on the port side, eliminating the tach.

do you have the manual for "Yamaha Remote control box"?

I do and it has the schematic for the dual ignition switches. There is an idiot light that is connected to one side only yellow wire. there are lots of (inline?) diodes on this setup too. with this diag. it may be easier to locate the problem, or at least rule out the gauges(you did) or the keyswitches and get closer to the problem.

ahhhh, the symbols I mistook for diodes are indicating current flow(polarity). I'm still looking at trying to make some sense of this

Thanks again Silversurfer, and Yamtech.
I will try disconnecting the switch in a day or two when I get back to the boat.

Yamtech. What is the function of this switch ? Is it ONLY for the deadman, or does it do more ??

Thanks again, and stay tuned. I'll let you know what happens.
