Talked to dealer about getting an additional 4 year warranty on my 2001 250h ficht. It's still under original 2 year. Just had power head replaced and warranty runs out before next season. If new power head went again it would cost about $7000.00 to replace. Just got word that additional 4 years would be $3500.00.
Does that seem high? I Found a company on the internet called "Warranty Direct" Same coverage is about $2400.00. They are listed with the Better Business Bureau. Has anybody dealt with them or heard about them?
I would appreciate any response.
$2400 sounds right, get the extended warrantee. When I bought my 2002 250 rude this year they had the promotional offer of rolling over the $1750 rebate-you get more 4 yrs. for a total of 7yrs. of coverage. The company sent me a contract already.
Make sure you get the run down of what they cover and a sample of the contract so you can evaluate what is covered. $3400 is very high.
Your price sounds about right. I got three more years on my Yammies this winter and they were $1800 so another year for $600 sounds right. As for the third party provider here is my take. If you are positive you are not selling the boat or motors in the next four years AND you dealer has positive things to say about the third party, I might consider it, otherwise, pay the money and go mainstream. The money you think you are saving might be an illusion come repair time if the warranty company is hard to work with. Some may not have any regional inspectors to approve the work. You might have to send your motor to them to inspection, huge hassle. If your dealer is an Evinrude dealer, usually they can certify the problem and get approval from the Evinrude warranty. Just something to consider.
That's high to me but my opinion is that when they offer extended warranties its usually cause they win. This is absolutely true with cars - I don't have enough experience with boats to know if it carrys over.
If you can afford to insure yourself - and lets face it a boat is a luxury item- you probably should
Agree w/"GRUNT", in 30 yrs. I have spent less than $500.00 on outboard mech. work. Who wants an engine some ins. co has paid to replace 1 piston? I may be sorry the next time I turn the key, but in the meantime, I'll take my chances
I'm sorry, for some reason when I first read this I was thinking the manuf. warranty was $2,400 not $3,400. $3,400 is defintely high. You can negotiate with the dealer. If I remember right, I was able to save about $300 per motor by going through a dealer verus Yamaha direct.
If you have the bombardier version, Bombardier added a year to the 2001 models to make the warranty a total of three years. If this applies to you, you will have time to think about it.
It is a 2001 OMC engine, that now has a Bomb power head. Checked and it was only a 2 year. I would pass on it all together, but after last month I just don't trust it. I'll prabably go through the dealer, Not cheap, but if I do need it, should be less hassle, than a third Party.
