Default Decarb question

I'm picking up my new (used) Parker 2320 sportcabin on Thursday. The 200 carbed 97 Yamaha has approximately 500 hours.

Looks to be in perfect shape, totally clean, sounds good on muffs, compression all ~120-125.

The owner indicated he always used Yamalube and ring free every "few" fill ups.

I am worried about carbon. I picked up some decarb stuff....should I run it for awhile, or should I immediately decarb at the dock?

or should I do it on the muffs?

Thanks for any help.

I would run it for a while. Use ring free with EVERY tankful of gas. I would decarb before winter and then winterize the engine. Next spring run the engine long enough to burn out the storage fluid and put in new plugs. Fill with gas and oil and go have fun.

I would run it a little first just to make sure everything is up to speed. Then I would buy a gallon of ring free and give it the shock treatment with decarb.I owned a 1990 200 Yamaha I got rid of 2 years ago every few years I would give it the shock treatment and never had a promblem.

I would decarb it when you get it. It won't hurt anything. Then do it every 70 hours or so. I always do it in the water. There is a timeframe that you have to run the motor after decarbing it. Read the directions on the can.

Default Decarb question

I would run it on gas station gas, Wal-Mart TC-W3 and I would never add anything other than gas to the tank.

Adding things other than gas to your gas tank very effectively robs you of money. Do you know how many additives are already in gasoline? Do you think adding some more is really going to help the situation? Trust me, it aint.

I've been running a Yamaha engine for two years now, and she seems to be fine doing the same thing my Daddy did to his outboard engine... putting fuel and oil in it.

Trust me, ring free is a scam. All of the other crap is a scam. If you think things are gumming up a bit, spray some SeaFoam in there... don't be dissapointed when no smoke comes belching out...

Good luck with your new float n' buggy!

Mark

I use OMC Engine tuner, just as it says on the can. Once in the spring and again mid-season. It cost $7.00 a can. I do it in the driveway after letting it set over night. Can't hurt and you do see 'black stuff' come out the back. Just put a cup under the exhaust and see what the water looks like.

I also use the OMC Tuner to de-carb once after a couple of trips in the spring to burn off the fogging oil and again late in the season. My '89 just keeps on purring. It actually cleans the plugs, too.

De-carb it now-start fresh.

Go ahead and de-carb
Like Ding said it won't hurt anything.
When I ran outboards, carbed Johnsons, I would de-carb in the spring, mid season and at winter lay up.
As far as wasting money I don't know about that. I can tell you that small amounts of carbon did come out of the engines and they ran smoother after a de-carb.
Try it.

Mark A,
I follow your school of thought.
Have you seen the latest scam by oil companies, there is a new specially formulated motor oil for cars with high miles. My guess is the only thing new about it is the bottle's label.

Its hard to believe a gasoline addative can do what the OMC tuner "system" can. (Same with auto fuel injection cleaners - you can't get it concentrated enough tio do much by adding something to the gas). I use it in my Bayliner (130 hp johnson) and would use it in the fichts but with the direct fuel injection you really need a separate high strength tuner fuel mix to do it right - so I let the dealer do it once a year. Its not in the owners manual but it is in the maintenance manual (??).
