RE: How far do you go offshore, with single outboard???
I took my Grady-White Strike 24 with Yamaha 250 out 35-50 miles on a regular basis. I've never lost an engine offshore. Of course I never shutdown an engine offshore either.
Re: How far do you go offshore, with single outboard???
Without a kicker 25 miles is about my limit on the east coast--23 SE with F 225. At that point there is a lot of faith on the VHF reaching somone to contact Tow Boat US. Have not had so much as a sputter so far in 400 hrs, but with mechanical things anything is possible.
Just a foul up with that safety switch can make you dead in the water. It is easy to bypass but I have not done it yet on my new rig. It is not uncommon for those things to shut down. My 21 SE quit right in the middle of Ocean City Inlet. Took a few minutes to find the problem with big sportfishermen roaring by me and my boat bobbing up and down in their wakes.
Re: How far do you go offshore, with single outboard???
Ran out to 30 NM Wednesday, lookin' for 'phin...20' KW DC, single well-maintained Yammie F115...got all the necessary gear, well within VHF range of many other off shore boats here in the Keys...MMSI enabled, good weather, great sea conditions, etc.
What the hell, flew 2000 hrs in single engined aircraft with USN...
Had only one complete engine failure (turbine at that)...so simply dead-sticked it in... *
Re: How far do you go offshore, with single outboard???
I did 40-55 miles on a regular basis over the years in my 21CC's and the GW 22 Tournament. Biggest problem I ever had was getting a hook stuck in the hydraulic steering line. Using the old Hynautic pressurized system ....
Re: How far do you go offshore, with single outboard???
I'm sure Gafish912 will reply to this soon enough. He has a nice 23 KW with a 300 that he often takes to the stream off the coast of Savannah. A good run from here.
Re: How far do you go offshore, with single outboard???
I bought my grady from a guy that ran it to the stream regulary out of brunswick/ savannah area in ga. Seventy five miles or something close. ox66 200. I am ready to go down to destin and run 45 to 60 and not have fear pending sea conditions and actually getting a couple days off of work. Ran 25 out of sebastain on it's maiden voyage in 2 to 4's and loved the ride! 228 seafarer
