Default What kind of Oil For My New Suzuki DF 140?

My first (20 - hour) scheduled oil change is upon me, and I am going to do it myself. What kind of oil do you use in your DF 140? My dealer said any brand will do as long as it meets the specs.

Thanks!

i use castrol

edit: you really should bring the outboard back to the dealer for the 20 hour check...will make warranty issues much easier if it ever comes up. they'll give the motor a good once over, and from then on feel free to maintain it yourself

I had a thread on this not too long ago...I have the same motor. There are a number of two letter ratings in your owners manual. The oil you purchase has to meet one of those ratings. Not all oils meet them, so you can't just go to the Autopart store and pick up the cheapest 10W-30. Bring your manual with you to wherever you go and you should be able to match it up pretty easily.

Changing the oil was pretty easy. Make sure you have the little tool bag that came with your motor. It has the tool for the drain plug and the one to remove your lover cowling....which you must do to get to the filter. Also, the owners manual states that you should change the oil plug washer after each change. There are a bunch of them in your tool kit.

I have the DF115 and changed the oil before lay-up for the winter. Now I am reading about the new NMMA classification for 4-stroke outboard oils. I used Castrol GTX meeting the Suzuki requirements in the owners manual. Am I OK or is this new oil classification something we should be using? It's an FC-W classification.

Any thoughts on this? I should be OK with the warantee since the API classification was per the manual.

Just changed the oil and filters in both of my 140s last weekend.I used the factory Suzuki filters and Havoline 10W-40 oil.The bottle says it is API SL rated.

When the Suzuki oil went over 4 bucks a quart (was 5 something when I looked at it today) I switched to and have been using Delo 400 15W-40 for the last 300 hrs or so. If you look at the Suzuki oil it is also rated for the latest diesel oil specs that many of the traditional car oils didn't meet (including Mobil 1) when I researched this subject a few years ago. Twin DF140s with over 400 hrs and counting...

Ed in FL I used the Delo 15W40 in my desiel tractor's, but the DF-140's call for 10W40 as per owner's manual.

crackerasscracker I'm glad you mentioned about the couple of special tool's. I didn't get them with my motor's. I'll check into that, but is it really a big deal? Couldn't you just pull the side cover's with a 1/4in drive socket and ext.?

I put in Mobil one as soon as they were out of warranty and then put Lucas gear oil in the lower unit -
350 hours on them when I did that

I figure around 550hours or so I will repeat with the synthetic lubricants and change the plugs and water pumps

Warthog5, the manual actually gives you a range of oils you can use, yes, they recommend a 10W-40 for nominal conditions. If you look at page 4 of the manual, they list oils from 10W-30 all the way to 20W-50, all that I lose is 10 degrees of cold weather running with a minimum rating of 10 degrees F with the 15W-40. Since we don't have to worry about really cold temps in our area (and I won't be going out if its less than 32 F anyway) I went with the Delo. I don't fish much from November to March as I'm usually chasing deer in a couple of different states.

I may switch over to Mobil 1 in the future since its now rated to the highest diesel classifications and I also run Mobil 1 in my V-10 truck. At the time I looked at an alternative oil I was more concerned about having a good additive package in the oil since the Suzuki oil was rated at the highest diesel classification, and many of the regular car oils including the synthetics weren't, hence the move to Delo 15W-40.

You don't need the tools package, a 1/4 drive and extension will work fine, but the tool they give you is pretty quick at getting all the screws loose for the lower unit cover.

Another item to keep in mind is the oil filters, I bought the Johnson brand the other day and compared them to the Suzuki filters, there is no comparison as the Suzuki filters look to be of much higher quality and are made in Japan vs India as stamped on the Johnson filters and they weren't any cheaper! No more white parts for the Suzuki!

OK, here is my two cents, I have Suzuki DF 140 and after the 20 hour limit I changed over to Mobil 1 15w40 with a Suzuki oil filter and never looked back. I plan on continuing the use of Mobil 1 as long as I have the motor. Good Luck!

Do the 20 hour service at the dealer, yeah its costly about $150, losing your warranty could cost you a heck of alot more. After that Delo 400 15W40 for me after a couplr of oil analysis, that showed 10W40 falling out of spec. I may switch to synthetic a liittle later. So far 400 hrs and no problems.

Just my .02

The 20 hour service is a "warranty issue"! I would let the dealer complete this service. If something goes wrong, you are covered. Don't be "penny wise" and "dollar foolish"! Sometimes it "pays" to spend more than you expected,------ than less than you should! ----Just my opinion. ---------Greg

Thank's Ed I did go back and read it again and looked closer at it. Your correct. My motor's have been sitting in the create's for 1 1/2yr's waiting to be mounted. So it's getting real close to time to mount them now.

I've spent more time reading the factory manual than the owner's manual.

DavidM, Take it to the dealer, they need to do the valve lash adjustment and I'm sure if something happened to the motor you would be on the losing end of the argument.

DMC, Have you done an oil analysis on the Delo 15W-40 yet? When I check the oil it looks almost new until the 60 hr mark then starts to darken up over the next 40 hrs. I'll send in a sample next time I change the oil, won't be till late spring now.
