Default Motorguide - trolling motor problem - H

Hey guys,
My motorguide trolling motor recently started giving me issues and is currently inoperable, which is terrible timing because the fall striper fishing is starting to take off
It is a 55lb transom mount saltwater series variable speed motorguide motor. The problem I'm having is that it seems to have a mind of it's own. When I turn on the power switch, I can hear a clicking sound coming from under the control cover, then it jumps into 100% max speed (WITHOUT the throttle control being advanced in either direction).
I think it has to do with the control board on the variable speed, but this is purely an assumption. I also can't seem to find much useful information on the web, or even any place that sells trolling motor parts.
If there are any trolling motor pros out there, please offer my some advice. I really like this motor and it's put me on a lot of fish.
ALL SUGGESTIONS WELCOME!

Thanks!
B

Varimax or Great White ? How old is it?

Early model Varimax's were prone to this problem, will need a new board. Newer Varimax's seem to be ok now.

I presume your battery and connections are in great shape, nothing screws up a digital control board faster than low voltage & current starvation.

My tournament partner's did the same thing. Board was bad. Ran ok until you went to 0% then the motor would go the wide ass open and about throw every body off the bow of the boat. We put a toggle switch in the bottom of the head and you just never went to 0%. You would run down to about 10% and flip the toggle switch and kill power to the motor. When you flip the switch back on, it would be where it was on the handle so you needed to make sure you were not at 0% or 100% or you would send someone for a swim. He finally got rid of it, thank god, and got a 101 minn kota. Get a Minn Kota, that would be my suggestion. lol

Capt. Scott and AquaWhaler,
Thank you for your advice and for sharing your experiences. I can't determine if mine is a Great White or a VariMax. The sticker on the head says "SW-HTV variable speed 54lb thrust", but it has an image of a great white shark on the sticker.
The motor already has an on/off switch on the underside of the head. From what I've gathered here and elsewhere, I think it may be time for a new unit altogether.
Anybody know what the warranty is in Minnkotas?
Thanks again!
Brandon
