Twice! Once in the Fire Island Inlet and once in Provincetown Mass harbor. No damge done, managed to get away relatively unscathed!

Well, there was this time when I was in the French Quarter in New Orleans and a group of them ran over me trying to get to the Krystals on Canal St.

I saw video of this on tonight's news. Pretty unbelievable that nobody got hurt. It makes me wonder though how fast do these guys normally come into the dock? Is there some kind of mechanism on the dock that slows the thing down? Why couldn't the captain throw his engines into full reverse? They knew they were in trouble when they told the passengers to brace for impact. I don't understand how that could happen the way it looked on the video.

They come in fast. I remember riding the Governers Island Ferry in NY and it amazed me how fast they did come in. The bulkheads are built so its kinda like driving on a trailer with guides. I think a lot of them have the 360 degree reversible drives. (If that's what you call it) I do know it could back down with authority.

Engines quit and he glided right past his stop

That explains it! Loss of power at the worst possible time. Another classic use of the 'f' word:
"Get the ______ outa the way!!"

I was there, waiting to board that ferry
Loved the way the captain steered right for the blow boats . Unfortunatly, there was some really nice power boats mixed in .
The only thing I can say is they should have been dropping anchors sooner!
Wildest thing I've ever seen
Cheers... Tyee. !!!

Double-ended ferries have propellors at each end. When reversed the fwd one thrusts ahead, they can actually be moved sidewise rather well by thrusting in both directions and opposing the rudders. This one must have lost power.

The real kicker here is that the boat was supposedly just back from a major overhaul......somebody is going to get spanked on this one............"gee, I thought I crimped and heat shrunk those electrical connections to the motor controls"

Never been run over by anything and work hard to keep it that way.... If your next of kin is in court arguing that your were in the right, you've already lost!

I remember last year sitting on my boat watching the Martha's Vineyard ferry coming into dock. I was commenting that I couldn't believe how fast they approached the dock that if their engines ever failed and they couldn't throw it into reverse, they'd end up in the middle of town.

This guy in BC proved my point.

Watch out for the high speed ferries in Buzzards Bay and Long Island sound. These suckers run 30 plus knots and have a way of sneaking up behind you.

Back to the whole Sea Tow thread; Did the captain call for a tow or salvage?
