I live in Ontario, I go to Muskoka area a bunch of times a year, and see alot of wooden boats, what do you guys think of em? I was just curious, they are sooo expensive and just wondered if you guys thought they were worth the buck, cause ive seen some for like $500 000

Personally, I think that some of the older wooden boats are so much better looking than current boats. They take alot (and I mean ALOT!!!!) of work to keep them in that shape. If I were to ever run across an old 30+ Chris Craft, Thompson, etc., that was in decent shape and the owner is trying to get rid of it, I'll probably get one and try to restore it.

Here's one opinion as a Chris-Craft fan...
It depends on whether the boat is a "classic" as to whether I would buy a wood boat.
Just like automobiles, "classic" boats will APPRECIATE in value- all modern fiberglass boats depreciate from day one. You need to do your research and buy at the right price- but you can spend 20-40 K on a fully restored classic "woody" and with proper care and maintenance it will only increase in value; you'll own an investment -not to mention a head-turner at the docks. Try that with a Bayliner...

An old quote...wood is the only building material that BOTH rots AND burns...they are pretty to look at, but you'd better be prepared for lots of maintenance. I love wood, am an old forester, but not on boats...t
