Default Yamaha F250 XA vs F250 XCA

Looking at both the "old" Yamaha F250 (3.3L) and the new 4.2L F250 with command link. As I understand it, would be a considerable cost to go to the "new" model, I'm told 4-5K. Have heard a couple of claims that the older 3.3L model does a little better on fuel due to smaller engine but have not see that substantiated yet. Considering these for a single engine application on 22-23ft bay boat. Is the extra cost for the "new" one justified? Looks like weight difference is about 40-45 lbs per Yamaha specs.

Guess it depends on what your plans are for the boat.
3.3's are harder to find.
4.2 SHO's are mechanical, 20" though.
The 4.2 and 3.3 are light years apart.
The 4.2 will be better on resale down the road.

I have the XCA 300 2013 which is the same block as the 250.Its on a new Sea Hunt BX 24 bayboat.Its a very big bayboat.Well over 4,000 pounds.I get great MPG.at 3500 rpms I get 3.8 MPG doing 30 mph and at 4000 I get 3.3 MPG doing 37 mph.The 250 will be even better.I think buying the old style 250 would hurt u in the long run in resale and I bet the new 250 gets better MPG also.Got plenty of torque to.The fly by wire and digital gauges are great to.I think if u keep the boat long enough u will have a lot harder time selling it with the XA 250...

I have the 4.2L 250 offshore, it's a great engine, big upgrade over the old 3.3L. More power (F300), more torque, more displacement. Go for it!

The difference between the two motors will be felt in the mid-range, not at WOT. The 4.2L will accelerate quicker and be able to handle more variations in boat weight without getting bogged down easily.

On an easy to plane boat like a bay boat, the 3.3L should be fine. For a harder to plane deep vee offshore type boat, the 4.2L is the better choice.

4.2L all the way, but the 3.3 does burn a little less fuel (not enough to be a factor though).

Guys thanks a lot for the input. We'll be weighing this out in the coming couple of weeks it looks like. I was initially hell bent on the 4.2 but after talking to my dealer buddy and seeing some of your comments, i'm not so sure i'm against the 3.3 F250, particularly considering the up front cost savings. Think the money saved could be well spent on goodies for the boat itself.

The 4.2L should not cost you more than $2500-3000.00 rigged.When we have taken the 3.3L off and installed the 4.2L people are able to get the same cruise at about 400-500 rpms less getting the same or better fuel economy plus thier top end improves by at least 5 mph.
