Suzuki 115DF shift problem

I have a 2002 Suzuki 115DF 4 stroke, this year it has become extremly hard to shift into forward and reverse. A local shop said it may be an o ring under the motor where the shift rod goes down but they can't look at it till after the fourth. Any clues?
