this question is one of the most discussed here - use the search button for E-tec - you can read about this until next week and not get it all....
It appears to be as good (reliable, quiet, fuel efficient) as the other major brands.
Depending on who you talk to, any diffrence in the motor brands is so small if any, it's realy splitting hairs at this point.
I currently own a Rude & a Yamaha, both are great motors.
i have twin 200 e-tecs & they have been great.i am getting 6-8 % better fuel & over 50% better oil usage than my old yamaha hpdi 200's(which imho were good engines).the e-tecs run much smoother & give a better ride quality than my hpdi's did.i would recomend the e-tec ..good luck
Many people rave about the E-tecs, but I think it is still to early to jump to any conclusion.
As to your other question 250 HP is probably fine, but I would not go any lower. I do not know of anyone that has regretted putting more HP (within limits), as opposed to less on their boat.

But I would expect that out of any of the new engines these days. As RI Builder said, it is too early to jump to any conclusions, so I opted for the 7 year warranty on the engine - just in case the e-tec is too good to be true.

200 E-Tech
I've got a 200hp e-tec on the Hydrasports 2300 CC. Top speed w/ a full tank and 3 adults is 45mph (by GPS). Plenty fast for that hull. From my limited (~30 hours on the engine) experience, the e-tec has held up to all the promises. Quiet, sips fuel, plenty of power, no smoke, reliable. But I would expect that out of any of the new engines these days. As RI Builder said, it is too early to jump to any conclusions, so I opted for the 7 year warranty on the engine - just in case the e-tec is too good to be true.
You can expect a van full of thugs stopping by and roughing you up for talking that way about your motor.
Thanks Guy's for the info. I'm going to go for it! Now I just have to decide on the size. The boat comes stock with a E-TEC 200, but for 1,800.00 more I can up grade to the 250 E-Tec (saltwater series) The 230-WA is the model, any suggestions? (I plan to have 3 people on board but as many as 5)
If it was me, I would go with the 250. Having extra power is always better than wishing you had more. I think if you go with the 200 you will end up regreting it. The WA is heavier than the CC mentioned above. The 200 is only 2/3 of the max rating, not enough in my opinion.
I would be comfortable with the e-tec. I had a pair of 2000 Ficht 200s. They were great. I loved them. Bomb made the Ficht better after that, and now the e-tec is further evolution.
everyone knows how i feel about the e-tecs, and the reason is just hammered home on weekends like we just had. we fished friday from gray-light to 9:15 pm (over 14 hours) and the gps track said we traveled 200.1 miles. the engines were never turned off during the day, and that includes the 'perfect storm' that blew in on friday evening that made our 1 1/2 hour ride home into 4 hours of a white knuckle washing machine, waves over the t-top endurance challenge.
saturday was a better day, and included shorter travel with our fishing only about 39 miles from pensacola pass. we ran the motors less on saturday, but still managed to put over 100 miles on the track.
that sort of use is not typical for the weekend angler and we really feel that if we can put that kind of use on our motors, then most anyone can depend on them.
(sorry if i sound like an infomercial, but we just love our e-tecs)
i normally try to post our performance numbers after a big weekend, but the numbers this weekend are pretty skewed, as during the storm we were showing 20 mph for nearly 2 hours and made minimal headway on the gps. a lot of fuel burned for very little distance traveled. most of it was up'n down.
and as far as HP, you know the saying about boaters having '2 foot-itis', i think it applies to HP, as well. i would surely opt for the big HP.

I'm very happy with my 250 ETEC. I've put a little over 500 hours on it now. Have changed gear oil twice and spark plugs twice. I'm 100 hours ahead of schedule and could have gone longer between changes.
Prior to the ETEC, I've owned 3 other Evinrude engines and had no real issues with any of them. BRP is building them well.

Guys....would really appreciate your input. Don't know much about the new outboard beasts on the market today.
I've had three inboard boats, i.e., twin 454 Marine Power gas, Twin 3116 Caterpillars & Twin 465 Yanmars and now going back to center console with twin outboards. Had 31' Ocean Master with twin Black Max Mercs years ago.
Buying a new Black Hawk 25' center console with twin 200 HO Evinrude Etec (220 hp at prop). Read all the material and watched the impressive video.
Being a female, love the new white ETec and will look great on sea foam boat, but don't want to spend time at the dock if there are known problems with the ETecs regardless of how pretty they are. Comments, please.
I am currently waiting for delivery of a 250 hp E-tech. After installed I was told it is hooked up to a computer and set up for synthetic oil. I hear 2.5 gallons of oil last over 100 hours!!!! I suffered for years with a gas guzzling Merc EFI 250. Thanks for all the info and I'll be sure to post my thoughts after I run her for a couple months.

Sounds like someone isn't being square with you. About the only way you'll see that kind of oil consumption is if you idle around at low rpms for 100 hours.
Once you get past the computer controlled break-in, expect to burn around 6-7 gallons of XD-100 per 100 hours. Perhaps a little more or perhaps a little less depending on how you run your engine.
2.5 gallons for 100 hours. if your oil consumption is 100:1, that would be 250 gallons of fuel and at 100 hours you would need to see fuel consumption at 2.5 gallons per hour. no problem. thats keeping it under say, 2000 rpms (for a hundred hours ; ? ). as long as you dont want to go anywhere fast, ever, you should be just fine!
how 'bout some real data:
we fished the pensacola bud light king mackerel tournament this weeked (took 5th in small boat and top lady angler for sunday)
total miles traveled this weekend: 390 miles
*over 6 hours of travel at greater than 5000 RPMs
total fuel used: (approx) 260 gallons
total oil used: (approx) 3.5 gallons
Conditions: sloppy, choppy, bumpy, windy and some smooth
total time on the water: (approx) 14 hrs + 13 hrs= 27 hrs
that means: WEEKEND TOTALS
average fuel economy:
1.5 MPG
9.26 gallons per hour
oil consumption: 74.2:1 (consistent with what we have been seeing all along)
that may not sound stellar, but remember this is some of the most extreme real-world conditions a consumers boat might see. not many weekend boaters will run 5200 RPMS for 75 miles each way to the fishing grounds and never turn a motor off all day.
we have the boat back at our service center this week for some downloads and surveys. the guys at BRP have great interest in our motors as we are pushing them harder than the typical boater and if a problem manifests in design or engineering, they expect motors used to the degee ours are will show up here first.
