Made my 1st run offshore in the new boat. I have a question for any 236 owners. I have an f225 and ran 172nm and burned 82 gallons. The fuel burn seems a bit much, boat was fully loaded with 3 adults. Does that seem about right? What kind of fuel #'s are y'all getting. Thanks.
Dod,
I fish a 23' Contender with an F225. Fully loaded running offshore, crusing at 32-36mph, trolling, and running back in at like speed, I average about 2.2mpg. Your fuel burn average was 2.3, so that probably pretty close to right. I run a 19 pitch Yamaha SWS II prop.
I figured that on statute mile not nautical mile.
What kind of tab use? I was out Sat and had to use a little and it affected fuel economy. The other thing is the boat is about as big as you would normally go for a F225. I don't think it is underpowered, but that is minimum power. The boat is 9ft wide and 24deg deadrise, all of that plus added weight will put a toll on fuel economy. What rpm's were you trolling at? I would venture to say you were slightly lugging and economy will suffer, but there is no way around that. I use one motor at a time and it helps, but I have the same problem. Do you monitor your fuel burn while running? I can go from 14gph to 11gph but just tweaking the trim a VERY LITTLE bit, or just adjusting the tabs slightly.
All in all, I think your boat is very close to Ace's and your numbers seem to be inline with his. I went 160Nmi and burned 79.2 gallons for a reference. We ran about 28-30kts out and back.
Thanks Ace & SF. One of the guys on the boat thought we should have done a little better so I thought I would ask. I thought the numbers looked close to some of the research I had done prior to buying the boat. The mileage was statute not nautical. I will play with the tabs to tweak it a little, it being my first runn offshore I'm sure with more experience it might get a little better. We ran out at about 30mph turning 4700rpm, it is a heavy boat I wish the f250 was available when I ordered.
I am very pleased with the boat we only landed hard a cople of times. There were many times I braced myself for a hard landing and it never came. It's a little to early to tell but I think I made a good choice in the 236 considering I wanted to stay in the 40K range which eliminated some of the better new boats out there.
Just talked to Chris. Are you running a 17" prop? If so you may want to try a 19". If you could hit 6100 on the way in, you should still be at 5800 with a 21" and 5600 loaded. You would gain some economy but probably not any top end. Maybe even try a 4 blade, you have a heavy boat, have you tried the slippage calculater? Dunno the link, but it is on here somewhere....
I run the 19 pitch and can hit 6100rpm at WOT. I tried a 21 pitch, but the hole shot was terrible and the RPM's suffered a lot. You will never get the economy out of the 4 stroke while running it in a single application like this. All the research I've done seems the best economy in the 4 strokes is to run them at or about 4000rpm. I still like the better fuel economy than my OX66 225, the quietness, and no two stroke oil to buy.
