Default Evinrude 2002 250 hp overheat

This is a followup to my thread of a couple of weeks ago, I had a code come up #25 EMM overheat-Seahorse requested my findings.
After checking the thrmostats (clean) and the tubing I cleaned the cooling hoses to the EMM and found some salt deposits came out fo the hose that goes to the EMM.
Runs fine now. Thanks Seahorse.
Seahorse: Will the freshwater wash after each use remove this saltwater in the EMM or should I be using one of those salt removing liquids when the engine is flushed?

Flush for 15 minutes as soon as you get back to the dock while the engine is still warm. I'm of the opinion that fresh water should be enough provided its not leaving its own mineral deposits.

If you don't have the quick connect adaptor made by TH Marine that threads into the flushing port (about 15 bucks), GET ONE!

Glad that you got your problem fixed.

Flushing the motor will help take out the salt. Don't forget that you flush the motor for 5-10 minutes after it has been in the water for maybe 8 hours. You never get all the salt corrosion out, you just "slow it down".

On those flushing quick connect adapters. Do you leave them in or do you have to take them out every time? It looks as though there is a hole in them for the tattle tale. If you leave them in that would be easy to flush. Anyone have a good source where they can be bought?

You leave them in and they double as your tattle tale. I have a short 15 ft hose at my slip that is dedicated to engine flushing. The female side of the quick disconnect is on the hose and the water is turned on full time. Once I pull in and get a couple ropes tied up, I connect the flush hose and let it run while I'm securing the boat and unloading the day's trash, etc.

Pretty easy maintenance.

West Marine around here carries them as will just about any BRP dealer.

As Fletch says, you leave it in. It has a valve that gets pushed in when connected to the hose to allow water into the cooling system. When the hose isn't connected and the motor is running, the water pressure pushes the valve out and provides a tell tale. I made up a hose with two ends with a Y to flush both motors simultaneously. From time to time I get some funny stares from the blow boaters and when I do I just tell them these are new proto-type motors that run on fresh water water and I'm just replenishing their fuel tanks.

Thanks all, I have the quick connect and use it after each run, don't know how the salt "built up" but will now flush the - Sorry, I will learn to watch my language - out fo it alot.

Seahorse-any way to change the tubing into and out of the EMM to a clear type of tubing so you can see the conditon of the water flow enterring and exiting the EMM?
