Default 2001 200 HPDI Spark Plugs?

Does anyone know the correct spark plugs for a 2001 200 HPDI. I canít find anything on the Yamaha website and I have heard Yamaha changed the plugs from the ones listed in the manual. The plugs in there now work fine but I want to change them for the season and see if they are the same plugs Yamaha now recommends. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Do you have any idea what the model number is, there are three choices:

LZ200TX
Z200TL
Z200TX

Mike,

They had a 2001 mid year change on the HPDI spark plugs for the Z200. Do you have your primary ID number handy....I can tell from that which plugs you need. Starts with a "6" and has several letters
umbers after that.

Andy:

I do not have the number now but I will find it out and let you know. The number wouldn't be in the manual would it? I would assume it is just on the motor? If its on the motor I can't get it untill this weekend. Thanks for your help.

Mike

There are definetly two different spark plugs that are used on the HPDI 200's for that year. Without physically looking at the engine (ignition coils or the current plugs themselves) you can not tell except from the primary ID number. That number is located on the engines transom bracket...port side.

The primary ID number could be on your paperwork when you originally purchased it but will not be in your service manual.

I stock both HPDI 200*types..........cheaper the sparkplugs .com as well I stock all Yamaha spark plugs for that matter. OK.....enough of the self promotion already....*

Very early 2001 200 HPDIs had different coils and plugs. If you have had no foulig issues etc.. and have the original coils then you need to stick with the cheaper plugs that go with those coils. If they are the double electrode type plugs, then you need to have the coils that go with those. Probably if you have had no problems and just want to replace them. Replace them with what came out of them. I certainly would not be putting soemthing different in unless I really prooved they were wrong. And if you have had no problems, why look for something wrong? I bought a set of early 2001s and they already had the new coils and new style plugs, so you need a really early set to have the single electrode type plugs and coils. Very few of those made it out and most had no problems with them anyway.

Look at your coil connections. If they are black plastic, your motor uses the regualr style plugs. If they are gray, you have the updated electronics and use the double-ground electrode plugs.

On the inside of the engine where the cowling fits in will be an orange label with the correct spark plug number. The label is put in at the factory. Avoids all the problems with year, serial number etc.
I know the Yamahas have this label and I think perhaps other manufacturers may follow this practise.

I learned this the hard way after a Yamaha certified mechanic changed my plugs for a hundred hour servicing. I got 30 hours on the engine before it died during a hot sailfish bite off Alligator reef in the Keys. George's Outboard Service in Islamorada helped me solve the problem. George is by far the best mechanic I have ever seen.

Thanks for all the input. I am going down to the boat this weekend so I will take out the old plugs and see what they are. The motor runs fine, I just want to change the plugs for the new season and confirm they are the proper plugs which are in there already. Does anyone know why they changed the coils and plugs on the early models? Was there fouling problems.

When Yamaha first came out with the HPDI, within a few months, there were a lot of plug fouling problems in certain applications.

Yamaha redesigned the igntion system and coils then specified a more expensive dual ground electrode plug. On motors where the customer complained to the dealer, they upgraded the ignition and plugs at no charge, as long as the motor was in warranty. They did not retrofit all motors, only those who had a problem. If you did not tell your dealer, you wouldn't have known about it.

They did include a new plug decal for the inside of the motor pan, but many either were not installed or came off due to the oily film in the engine.

The only real way to tell is by contacting Yamaha with your serial number to see if the motor was upgraded, or to look at the color of the coil connectors.
