Going to Cancun in a couple weeks. Have heard some horror stories about people getting montezumas revenge from the drinking water or ice there. Looking for input from those that have been, and whether I need to be concerned.
I wouldn't worry about it Bullshippers down there and he drinks the water all the time and he's..... well......errrr....hmmmmm.... maybe you better not.
Unless you stick to bottled beverages its inevitible. Its easier if you have a tough stomach (i do). Just try not to drink tap water straight.....it did bad things to a buudy of mine. Its not as much IF you'll get it just how bad IMHO.
Have been vacationing in Cancun over the past 7 years. No worries about drinking the water there as it's all filtered and purified. If you are that concerned just drink bottled water and take some medication with you. Just ask your M.D. for a prescription and tell him that you are going to Mexico. If you travel outside of Cancun that's when you have to worry about the Revenge! Cancun is definitely one of the best vacation spots on this planet, you will have a great time there.
Low coastal areas, such as beach towns, have the highest probability of water problems during peak occupancies, due to inadequete sewage treatment facitlities.
Cancun is good, but I would drink just bottled drinks and stay away from fruits and veggies that are not peeled. And I concur that taking along some stomack antibiotic is good advice.
Water chemistries differ from area to area, and the difference in mineralization makes me sick too for a day if I drink tap water on trips to the states.
So why chance it. Your hotel will leave bottled water in your room, and the ice is always purified. No reason to take a chance as the bottled water is free anyway.
Reefdivesr got it right, water is all purified on the hotel strip. If you go into town or visit the ruins you better be careful. If your adventerous rent the quads its about a half hour ride but you;ll have a great time. Xtaret, I'm spelling it wrong but it pronounced like that, is a great day trip. Good luck enjoy your vacation.
In addition to the bottled water advice, a tip given to me is to take a dose of pepto bismol every morning. That has worked well for me for the past two years.
I have been there a bunch of times with no problems. Then again, I only drank beer & tequila and ate crackers. Now I only have to worry about what the local female types may have given me ...
Just got back from my trip to Cancun. In our hotel they purified the water for ice, etc., but not the tap water in the room. Avoid water, ice and anything that maybe washed with water away from the hotel. In our group of 14, maybe three got sick for a day or two. Bring meds. just in case. Cheers.
I went down last yr. to playa del carmen, Xcaret to be exact, tried very hard NOT to drink the water, but like the others said, brushing your teeth, salads, ice etc. must have got me good, when i got back i was pukin out of every orifice of my body, (if ya know what i mean), for 12hrs straight! Ive never been so sick in my entire life! deff got a parasite down there. I would deff . go back, as we had the time of our life, but not without antibiotics next time.....deff be careful
i was in playa del carmen also.....viva maya resort.
they told us not to worry and that all the hotel water/ice was filtered and that all the fruit was okay.
i have a tough stomach so i wasn't worried.....i brushed my teeth like i always do and drank rum and cokes (with ice) like they were going out of style. we were there for 7 nights, and we (the wife and i) never had a single problem.
i'm sure the nicer resorts take whatever measures they can - they don't want you to get sick....if you get sick, you won't buy one of their time shares
....now if you're staying at pepe's bargain palace - then you should be worried.

Drink and brush with bottled water only. Beware of ice
Don't eat lettuce, tomatoes, or anything rinsed with water or that cannot be pealed
Pop two Pepto Bismols before every meal
Bring Amodium AD in case you do feel something starting to come on.
Lots of good advice above, but all digestive tracts are not created equal, and although they're trying to clean up their act down there, don't count on it being a done deal. Not only is the water questionable, but they fertilize their crops down there with anything they can get their hands on, if you get my drift, so you can have problems even if your tap hotel's tap water is sound.
I've spent a year or so in the Baja, a little less in Yucatan area. Experience in Cancun far worse.
If you're only there for a vacation stick with bottled water, including brushing your teeth. Also, be cautious of fresh produce and ice. If the resort has thier own desalinization plant, etc... a bit less caution may be in order.
Note that any local Parmacia has bactrim at these places. You can also get your hometown doc to get you some bug killers before you go. Cheap insurance.
