Default yamaha get the warrenty?

Might buy a boat with a yamaha 150 trp? should I get the warrenty? The motor is a 2001 and the warrenty is $1,550. The warrenty is good for only one year.

No, I wouldn't buy it. The only reason I would buy the extended warranty at this point would be for resale, and I don't think you'll sell it within a year (even if you do decide to sell it in a couple of months, the warranty won't be much). There's almost a 100% chance that the motor won't have any major problems within a year, so I would say that the warranty is a waste of money. After all, it's a Yamaha! Good luck with the boat!

If it buys you peace of mind so you'll use the boat without worrying, go ahead.

If you are worried about spending 1,500, then don't.

1,500 for a year sounds high to me. Is that the rack rate, or is the dealer sticking it to you? I'd try negotiating for a lower price. Make it a condition of you buying the boat, or you'll walk. At least have them split it with you 50/50. If they want to sell the boat, they'll work with you.

What is the "nature" of the warranty?

A 2001 motor MAY still be in some type of warranty mode? Is there an "existing" Y.E.S. warranty on it - and the $1,550 is to EXTEND that for one year? Will the warranty be through YAMAHA? Is it being sold by a dealer or is it privately owned?

Go to the "VENDOR FORUM" and send Andy at SIM (Shipyard Island Marine) a post - he will be able to tell you what the "scoop" is on the motor - re: whether it has an existing warranty, no warranty, etc..

That figure sounds HIGH to me, too???

My understanding is that when an ORIGINAL factory warranty has expired, and any extended "Y.E.S." warranty has expired, then you CAN purchase a "used motor" warranty from Yamaha - AFTER the motor has been inspected (paid for by YOU!) by an authorized Yamaha dealer. The Yamaha "used motor" warranties would be pretty expensive, I would imagine?

You can buy a "Y.E.S." warranty during the FACTORY warranty period, but I don't think you can buy an "extension" of a "Y.E.S." warranty?

Andy will be able to give you all the facts - as well as a quote on a warranty! I bought my "Y.E.S." from him and he will give THT members a discount! He will probably need the "primary serial # off the motor, as well as the complete model #, too.

Regards,

I would not buy it. Chances are you won't ever need it anyway. Take the $1,550.00 and put it in a bank account to use if and when something goes wrong.

Heck, I even have an 8 year old black anchor painted gray (Merc in Mariner clothing) and have never had to file a warranty claim or pay for a repair of any kind. Yamaha's are known to be much more reliable than Mercury's.

Treat the engine well, decarbon it yearly using Dunk's method, and you should be fine without any more warranty than what the motor automatically comes with. If something is going to fail it generally will fail within the first year or so.
